About the team

Canva is seeking a Senior Privacy and Product Legal Counsel who will be responsible primarily for advising on Children’s Privacy and our Canva for Education product.

The role will support product managers, engineers and other team members across the business. You will play a key role in delivering our strategy to empower everyone to design with Canva for Education and the next generation of exciting Canva Products.

You will be challenged to look at the big picture to find innovative ways and product solutions to drive product compliance in a fast-paced, growth focussed environment. With the ability to understand not just what the law says, but also industry and enforcement trends. You’ll help Canva see around corners to prepare for upcoming regulatory changes and influence how the business responds to those changes.

You’ll work to ensure Canva’s products continue to delight our community and meet our goals, whilst also keeping users safe and meeting community and regulator expectations.

What you'll do

  • Support and advice on the compliance strategies of Canva with global children’s privacy laws;
  • Provide privacy advice to the team working on Canva for Education, Canva products available for all K-12 teachers, students, schools, ministries and school systems around the world
  • Advise the business on various global issues surrounding Children’s privacy issues in relation to Canva products and ensure our continued compliance;
  • Work closely with other Canva business functions to develop internal policies and programs to drive Children’s privacy awareness and compliance; 
  • Assist with the assessment and resolution of data incidents (we have an on-call roster); 
  • Advise on privacy, including through the completion of Privacy Impact Assessments, Jira tickets and queries to our privacy channel;
  • Be the eyes and ears for the legal team and refer out matters to other legal specialities where required, including employment, commercial and intellectual property specialists;  
  • Advise on data processing agreements with vendors, due diligence and high risk Transfer Impact Assessments.

We'd love it if you had

  • A deep understanding and proven experience in key children’s privacy regulations globally (e.g. COPPA; GDPR; UK Children’s Code).
  • Demonstrated experience at or for a rapidly growing business, technology or SaaS industry experience would also be helpful, where you have advised on privacy and product matters.
  • Experience working in a global company with stakeholders based in different jurisdictions.
  • Good understanding of AI.
  • Familiar with the DSA.
  • Certified Information Privacy Professional or commitment to obtain certification upon joining our organisation.

We make hiring decisions based on your skills, experience and our overall assessment of what we observed and learnt in the hiring process. The target salary range for this position is $184,000 to $283,000. When calculating offers, we make salary decisions based on market data and candidates' skills and experience.
