Where and how you can work

Our flagship campus is in Sydney. We also have a campus in Melbourne and co-working spaces in Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. But you have choice in where and how you work. That means if you want to do your thing in the office (if you're near one), at home or a bit of both, it's up to you.

What you’d be doing in this role

As Canva scales change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that's all part of the fun. So this will give you the flavour of the things you'll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve.

At the moment, this role is focused on:

• Working as a hands-on engineer – and collaborate closely with other leads, designers, and product managers to deliver a delightful experience for external developers.
• Playing a leading role in defining the technical roadmap and architecture for the Canva Ecosystem, with an emphasis on ensuring external developers build secure and reliable apps and integrations on our developer platform.
• Finding opportunities for cross-team collaboration across the Ecosystem, Platform and Security groups to work on new ideas and improvements that help achieve our goals
• Facilitating knowledge sharing and optimally advocate for engineering needs to non-technical team members within the group.
• Modelling initiative and ownership in achieving goals, improving processes and solutions
• Mentoring engineers, sharing your knowledge and expertise in software development and privacy engineering practices.

You're probably a match if

• You bring security and platform reliability experience working in an ecosystem or systems integration environment as a hands-on engineer.
• You have experience with any combination server- and client-side web security, e.g. implementing auth specifications, Content Security Policies, CORS and XSS protection, etc.
• You are passionate about building a delightful developer platform.
• You are experienced in mentoring a team of software engineers.
• You are comfortable collaborating with various partners such as product managers, security, and platforms.
• You have a firm grasp of computer science and engineering fundamentals, including concurrency, multithreading, data structures, solution design, architecture, and design patterns.
• You are excited working in our core technology environment - our core stack is Java and TypeScript/React.

About the team

We aim to build the world’s richest Ecosystem of apps and integrations for visual design and communications that supercharge Canva’s ability to meet the diverse needs of a billion users and drive Canva’s MAU growth.

With the proliferation of innovations in generative AI and as large organizations have increasingly complex workflows to manage their designs, Canva is well poised to become the platform that simplifies access and discovery of services related to visual design. We are already working with hundreds of developers to enable access to these exciting products with our Apps SDK and Canva public REST API!

As one of the groups in Ecosystem, the Experiences Group builds our App Marketplace, Developer Portal, and SDKs (including developer tooling, starter kit, examples, docs, etc.).

As a Staff Engineer in this group, you will play a vital role in setting the engineering strategy to ensure we offer secure and reliable products while managing tradeoffs as we work toward our crazy big goals. This group's customers are developers, which means you will have the ability to bring your insights and an engineering mindset into our product roadmap.
