Job Description

Join the team redefining how the world experiences design.

Hiya, g'day, mabuhay, kia ora, 你好, hallo, vítejte!

Thanks for stopping by. We know job hunting can be a little time consuming and you're probably keen to find out what's on offer, so we'll get straight to the point.

Where and how you can work

Our flagship campus is in Sydney, Australia but we have a swanky new office in London that has all the bells and whistles. Even though you'll find us in Shoreditch, you have choice in where and how you work, we trust our Canvanauts to choose the balance that empowers them and their team to achieve their goals.

What you’d be doing in this role

Canva is seeking a Senior Privacy Counsel who will be primarily responsible for supporting Canva Group’s privacy goals across EMEA. The role will be part of the Privacy and Product Team and will support privacy goals across the business. You will play a key role in delivering our strategy to design anything and publish everywhere, and launching the next generation of exciting Canva Products.

As Canva scales change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that's all part of the fun. So this will give you the flavour of the type of things you'll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve.

At the moment, this role is focused on:

  • Supporting and advising on the compliance privacy strategies for Canva and its EMEA businesses
  • Providing specialist privacy advice on compliance with EU/UK data protection laws and regulations
  • Working closely with other Canva business functions to develop internal policies and programs to drive privacy awareness and compliance;
  • Assisting with the assessment and resolution of data incidents (we have an on-call roster);
  • Advising on privacy, including through the completion of Privacy Impact Assessments, Jira tickets and queries to our privacy channel;
  • Being the eyes and ears for the legal team and refer out matters to other legal specialities where required, including employment, commercial and intellectual property specialists;
  • Advising on data processing agreements with vendors, due diligence and high risk Transfer Impact Assessments.

You're probably a match if

  • You have a strong technical background, a deep understanding and demonstrated experience in EU/UK privacy regulations, and have been advising on privacy preferably at or for rapidly growing technology companies or a law firm with technology clients.
  • You have experience working in a global company with legal teams and stakeholders based in different jurisdictions.
  • You have a good understanding of AI, are familiar with the DSA and Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP) preferred.
  • You are excited to roll up your sleeves. You’re a “do-er” that can work in a fast paced environment and are able to find the answers if you don’t have them.
  • You understand tech and want to learn more about what happens “under the hood” on complex data analytics, tracking, “martech” and data sharing processes.
  • You are a pragmatic, business minded lawyer who wants to help build our business.
  • You are risk aware, not risk averse, can work independently and have the confidence to make judgement calls in ambiguous situation.
  • You know the law, but are conscious of industry practices and enforcement trends.
  • You are able to influence stakeholders to prioritise compliance and have experience doing this with leaders and stakeholders across areas such as product, engineering and education technology.
  • You are focussed on delivering projects even where this calls for you to go beyond the role of legal advisor and you’re not afraid to hustle other teams and individuals to get things done.
  • You are a collaborative team player committed to working together to achieve business goals

About the team

You will join a dynamic, global legal team working on a variety of innovative technologies with interesting legal considerations.  You will be required to leverage your expertise, good judgment and strong business sense to make complex laws simple and assist swift decision-making in our fast paced environment.

You will be challenged to look at the big picture to find innovative ways and product solutions to drive product compliance in a fast-paced, growth focussed environment. You’ll help Canva see around corners to prepare for upcoming regulatory changes and influence how the business responds to those changes. You’ll work to ensure Canva’s products continue to delight our community and meet our goals, whilst also keeping users safe and meeting community and regulator expectations.
