Canam Steel Corporation is a major US manufacturer of open web steel joists and steel deck.  The company participates in thousands of projects each year ranging from large distribution centers and high rise projects, to small retail centers.  The steel joist business in the US dates back to 1986 as a partnership with Canam Group and our steel deck business was launched by an acquisition of the United Steel Deck brand in 2010.  The Corporation currently operates six fabrication facilities, several sales and engineering offices, and employs approximately 800 people across the United States.

Job Description

CAREER SUMMARY:

Develop and coordinate an overall CSC carrier management strategy by working with traffic personnel at each value stream location to ensure there is consistency in execution of on-time final mile deliveries within budget while controlling risk and complying with all regulations.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 Work with the traffic personnel and Regional General Manager of each of the four CSC value streams to understand the logistic needs and challenges of each region.

  • Create a Carrier Management System that will provide consistent on-time final mile deliveries while meeting corporate objectives for performance and costs.
  • Identify carriers that can safely transport steel joists, deck, coils or angle and offer the best benefit to CSC through specified lanes, economies of scale or other means.
  • Negotiate contracts with logistics providers to ensure favorable terms for CSC.
  • Monitor CSC in-house transportation costs and determine cost benefit of in-house vs outside carriers for various lanes in each region.
  • Track CSC logistics assets and coordinate appropriate maintenance for safe and prolonged operation.
  • Develop and maintain KPIs including, but not limited to, Cost per Mile (CPM), On-Time Delivery (OTD) and Carrier Service Levels that provides consistency for all value streams.
  • Facilitate consistent tracking of cost vs budget for freight across all regions w/ variance explanations.
  • Identify and continuously validate tools for estimating freight costs.
  • Develop a monthly freight forecast that provides future visibility of freight costs on a rolling 12-month basis.
  • Have a thorough understanding of all DOT and safety regulations and ensure that all documentation is in place for compliance.
  • Coordinate minimum insurance requirements with VP of Legal and develop a robust means of confirming and documenting compliance for all modes of transportation within CSC.
  • Assist regions in obtaining special DOT permits, commercial invoices, etc.
  • Manage any incidents that arise from transportation accidents in which CSC equipment and/or product is involved.
  • Participate in hiring strategy and interviews for potential CSC logistics personnel as needed.
  • Communicate daily with traffic personnel at each of the sites with regards to carrier coverage.
  • Special projects as assigned.

Qualifications

·        Bachelor’s Degree preferred in Business, Supply Chain Management, or a related field.  Hazardous Material Certification a plus

·        10 years of transportation experience in numerous modes of shipping including trucking, barge (U.S. Inland Waterways, Great Lakes), ocean freight, rail transportation and the use of transloading facilities.

·        Working knowledge of all modes of transportation contract, rate structures and insurance requirements.

·        Knowledge of federal and state regulations

·        Knowledge of the national rail system and inland water system

·        Effective computer skills including a working knowledge of GSuite, MSOffice, etc.

·        Excellent analytical and Excel skills
