Job Description

The Mechanical Engineer IV plays a key leadership role in the design and delivery of HVAC and mechanical utility systems for complex, highly regulated building projects. This position requires strong technical expertise, the ability to manage multiple priorities, and the ability to lead and coordinate the work of others across multidisciplinary teams.

The Mechanical Engineer IV is responsible for overseeing the mechanical discipline scope of work and budget across all project phases and levels of complexity. The role collaborates closely with internal architects and engineers, as well as clients, construction managers, subcontractors, vendors, and manufacturers to deliver coordinated, high‑quality, and constructible designs.

Typical responsibilities include work performed directly or under supervision related to site selection, master planning, load calculations, utility assessments, energy modeling, commissioning and start‑up, design reports, code evaluations, plans, P&IDs, schedules, HAZOP reviews, installation details, and equipment/system selection and specification. The Mechanical Engineer IV leads design execution across all phases, including studies, conceptual and schematic design, design development, construction documentation, and construction administration.

Core Responsibilities

  • Serve as a technical and client interface for mechanical scope of work
  • Collaborate closely with architects, engineers, designers, and other internal and external partners to deliver coordinated, constructible designs
  • Support proposal development, scope definition, labor planning, and scheduling in partnership with the Project Manager
  • Lead and conduct field surveys of existing conditions and prepare supporting documentation
  • Identify and resolve non‑compliant or complex existing‑condition issues during site walks and construction surveys
  • Develop advanced design narratives, reports, construction drawings, and technical specifications with minimal or no oversight
  • Provide construction‑phase support including RFIs, submittal reviews, punch lists, and progress reporting
  • Perform technical quality reviews of calculations and documentation and drive overall project quality
  • Utilize project tools and platforms including Microsoft Office and BIM software
  • Mentor and support the development of junior and mid‑level mechanical engineers and designers
  • Participate in professional development and technical growth activities
  • Lead advanced mechanical system programming and master planning with support from senior staff, as needed
  • Lead mechanical design teams through execution of advanced and complex projects

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • ABET‑accredited Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Architectural Engineering (mechanical focus)
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in good standing
  • Advanced experience performing engineering calculations and designing HVAC, mechanical utility, and piping systems
  • Advanced proficiency with applicable mechanical, plumbing, fire, and building codes

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting Life Sciences (pharmaceutical, biotech, laboratory) or Food & Beverage facilities
  • Advanced knowledge of GMP manufacturing environments
  • Proficiency in Revit and AutoCAD
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • LEED, WELL, or other sustainable design credentials, or equivalent experience
  • Working knowledge of industry standards such as ASHRAE, SMACNA, ISPE, FDA, ISO, NFPA, and OSHA
  • Advanced experience conducting and leading field surveys and reporting
  • Advanced experience in plumbing system design
  • Familiarity with Revit plugins (e.g., Enscape, Unifi)
  • Exposure to computational or parametric workflows (e.g., Dynamo, Grasshopper, Rhino)
  • Strong cross‑discipline coordination and collaboration skills
  • Advanced coordination experience with construction trade partners, vendors, and manufacturers
  • Experience troubleshooting mechanical system issues in design and construction
  • Ability to develop and deliver internal technical training content
  • Willingness to travel in support of projects, client development, and training activities
