Job Description
The Capital Markets and Factor Investing Department (CMF) invests assets globally in public equities, fixed income securities, currencies, commodities, and derivatives, and manages the engagement of investment managers and co-investments in public market securities.
External Portfolio Management (“EPM”) is a group within CMF responsible for allocating capital to external managers in public markets across all trading styles, asset classes, and geographies. EPM oversees a portfolio of externally managed funds and separate accounts and has relationships with over 60 of the world’s top hedge fund managers.
We are presently recruiting a Senior Associate to join the Portfolio Construction & Risk team within the EPM group. Based in Toronto, the Senior Associate plays a key role in strengthening our portfolio construction and risk framework, optimizing risk and capital allocation, and managing all hedging activity.
What You’ll Do:
- Provide active oversight of all investment memos, including analysis to support quarterly portfolio review process
- Provide active oversight of the existing Python repository supporting portfolio construction processes
- Maintain/oversee position-based risk modelling (MSCI RiskMetrics), and risk report production, in collaboration with portfolio engineering team
- Oversee existing Tableau dashboard ecosystem to enhance monitoring across hedge fund allocations
- Lead beta and FX hedging activities
- Conduct research to enhance existing portfolio construction and risk practice. Examples include 1) formulation of strategy-level views to inform potential allocation appetite, 2) research on strategy cyclicality & relevant market factors / macroeconomic regimes that influence hedge fund performance
- Act as liaison between hedge fund and department-level portfolio construction & risk functions through active participation in various forums
- Support junior employees’ development & role execution
- Support the Managing Director, Portfolio Construction & Risk, in all internal stakeholder communications
- Support operational, technology and data initiatives to enable scaling of CMF’s investment programs
- Special projects and other duties as assigned - must be comfortable pivoting as priorities shift in a complex and dynamic environment.
Qualifications
Who We’re Looking For:
We look for candidates that have a track record of academic success while balancing extracurricular activities, a strong interest in the financial markets and portfolio management as well as effective communication, interpersonal and relationship building skills. In addition, the most successful candidates combine energy, enthusiasm, and intellectual curiosity, with a demonstrated interest in investing.
- A graduate degree (master’s or higher) in a finance-oriented discipline: Economics, Finance, MBA, Mathematical Finance, Financial Engineering
- 5-7 years relevant work experience in financial markets, such as funds, investment risk, portfolio research, or capital allocation. Prior experience in hedge funds, or fund-of-funds is an asset.
- 1-2 years of experience managing project teams (2-4 members); direct people management experience would be an asset.
- Demonstrates strong market knowledge with a comprehensive understanding of various asset classes and their associated risk drivers.
- Team player who enjoys a high-performance collaborative culture and develops junior team members.
- Familiarity/experience with MSCI RiskMetrics would be an asset.
- Proficient in Excel and Python; CFA, FRM, or CAIA designation would be an asset.
- Strong relationship management and oral communication skills.
- Demonstrates flexibility, adaptability, and initiative. Candidate needs to be resourceful and able to manage multiple priorities. Proven ability to meet deadlines and work well under pressure.
- Good communication skills and proactive engagement with key internal stakeholders and external partners.
