Job Description

The Strategic Execution Function (SEF) well enhance CPP Investments’ strategy execution capabilities and facilitate the successful execution of strategic initiatives.​ The SEF will provide tools and support to initiatives and Accountable Executives, track progress and ensure impact is realized and oversee the successful execution of strategic initiatives within the SEF. The SEF will work to build lasting strategic execution capabilities and expertise within CPP Investments and, in doing so, accelerate the One Fund evolution and pursuit of CPP Investments’ ambition.​

The Director, Strategy Execution will report to the Managing Director, Strategy Execution and will support the following group activities:

  • Contribute to the achievement of the One Fund strategy and overall ambition by enabling accountable executives to successfully executive complex strategic initiatives and helping to build strategy execution capabilities within CPP Investments more broadly.
  • Enable the successful execution of strategic initiatives and programs, partnering with the program management team on delivery of key initiatives.
  • Build the overall capacity of the organization to execute major initiatives through the development of tools and training that Departments can access for their own projects.
  • Provide ongoing, comprehensive support and project leadership to accountable executives and the supporting project team for specific strategic initiatives to ensure success of these initiatives. This support is diverse and spans across the initiative’s lifecycle.
  • Be responsible for the measurement of impact and value delivered by strategic initiatives, collaborating with other team members (e.g., program managers) to do so as appropriate. 
  • As a relatively new function, this person will be a critical team member in building and strengthening our strategy execution capabilities for strategic initiatives and across the organization.
  • Become the SEF’s subject matter expert in one of the areas needed to successfully execute projects (e.g., structured approaches to problem-solving), providing that expertise across various projects and determining how best to propagate that expertise through the Strategy Execution function and CPP Investments more broadly.
  • Develop, maintain, and manage relationships with appropriate internal stakeholders, at all levels of the organization. Maintain a pulse on what SEF is doing well and areas of continuous improvement, based on feedback from internal & external stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Ability to provide sophisticated approaches to solutioning ambiguous problems, including testing various hypotheses to achieve agreed business outcomes, breaking down large problems into their component parts, and performing qualitative and quantitative analyses to enable decision-making.
  • Able to analyse and synthesize complex information and identify key ‘so-whats’ that will drive progress on initiatives.
  • Ability to communicate in verbal and written forms, complicated or complex information in digestible and easily understandable formats, in particular with senior leaders. Has confidence and courage to ensure that difficult decisions are made as necessary.
  • Expert at stakeholder management, including determining how best to influence accountable executives and others in achieving desired outcomes.
  • Has repertoire of tools and frameworks to contribute to the SEF Group and can deliver excellent user experience across stakeholders including senior management.
  • Experience driving change management across an organization
  • Deep strategic Problem-solving capabilities (e.g., overcoming barriers, suggesting creative solutions, identifying risks and possible mitigating approaches, and use of data and insight) and broad experience in stakeholder management will be required across a wide variety of initiatives, ranging from Talent, Investment Capabilities, to Technology Implementations.
  • ~10 years experience in strategic project management and execution, managing change initiatives ideally at an enterprise level.
  • Previous experience in management consulting is preferred. Experience in investment banking, or other financial service roles is helpful, but not required.
