Job Description

The Director, Business Continuity, Enterprise Resilience is responsible for developing and implementing an enterprise-wide Business Continuity Management (BCM) Program that addresses a broad range of risks before they materialize, disrupting business operations. The role is responsible for ensuring that the organization can effectively monitor, manage, and mitigate business interruption risk, including response, recovery, and restoration continuity of operations effectively in line with corporate priorities.

This enterprise-wide role requires the Director to lead the BCM program across the organization by working with internal and external stakeholders. This accountability requires business acumen, an understanding of organizational priorities, and deep insights on how the failure of internal and external dependencies, including IT infrastructure and third-party vendors, can impact our organizations’ ability to operate. Excellent communication, time management, project management, collaboration and leadership skills are important to ensure success within this role. These skills, coupled with deep subject matter expertise will ensure that the BCM program is viewed throughout the organization as a strong partner, providing meaningful advisory supporting operational resilience.

The Director, Business Continuity is accountable for developing, maintaining, testing, and improving CPP Investments’ Business Continuity Plans, Tools and Processes to support the organization’s ability to respond to disruptive events across the risk spectrum. The role’s mandate encompasses all activities that support Crisis Management (CM), Business Continuity (BC), Technology Disaster Recovery (DR) events.

The position reports to the Managing Director and works closely with senior leaders, technology, investment, and non-investment teams.

Role-Specific Accountabilities:

  • Design and implement the business continuity strategy, and all related governance, ensuring alignment with corporate objectives and risk management framework.
  • Lead organization-wide engagements to conduct Business Impact Analysis, establish processes for the assessment and analysis of critical business functions, processes, and systems to determine potential risks, impacts, and recovery priorities.
  • Collaborate with relevant stakeholders to conduct deep and meaningful Business Process Mapping and identification of interdependencies, documenting findings and recommendations, and supporting business units in developing adequate recovery strategies for their critical business processes.
  • Oversee the creation, maintenance, and regular updating of business continuity plans and crisis management plans. Ensure plans are well-documented, actionable, and aligned with industry best practices.
  • Partner with technology teams to provide advisory on the development, implementation, testing and maintenance of comprehensive IT Disaster Recovery plans and procedures.
  • Coordinate with global technology teams to design and conduct regular testing and validation exercises to assess the effectiveness of business continuity and disaster recovery plans. Analyze test results, identify gaps, and collaborate with relevant stakeholders to implement necessary improvements.
  • Lead and coordinate incident response efforts during business disruptions, disasters, or other emergencies. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure timely and effective incident response and crisis management, communication, and recovery efforts. Deliver an effective process to document major incidents (post event report – lessons learned). Ensure each report is completed with input from relevant stakeholders.
  • Monitor regulatory requirements, industry standards, and emerging trends related to business continuity and IT disaster recovery.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports and presentations on business continuity and disaster recovery activities, progress for presentation to various committees. Maintain accurate records, documentation, and audit trails to demonstrate compliance and support future improvements.
  • Develop clear metrics for the evaluation of program components and standardized reporting that leverage data to inform improvements, communicating insights and making recommendations to multiple stakeholders.
  • Develop and deliver training programs to enhance overall business continuity and disaster recovery preparedness. Promote awareness and understanding of business continuity principles and procedures across all levels of the organization.
  • Using an intelligence-led, risk-based approach, facilitate the development and delivery of an annual tabletop testing and ongoing improvement of the response, recovery and restoration strategies and plans to ensure that CPP Investments can effectively respond, manage, and recover from major disruptions as a result of a broad range of dynamic risks across our geographic footprint.
  • Occasional visits to the CPP Investments’ global offices may be required.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 10+ years relevant experience designing, implementing, optimizing, and running BCM, Crisis Management, and Technology Disaster Recovery programs (a minimum of 5 years experience in investment management, pension fund or financial services industry, and exposure to enterprise and/or operational risk management is preferred)
  • Bachelor’s degree in business or the management of IT or a related field, or equivalent related experience.
  • Professional designation or certification; CBCP or MBCI industry certification or equivalent is preferred. Professional designation or certification in IT disaster recovery (e.g., CDRP, BCLE) IT governance (e.g., CGEIT) or cyber resilience is valued.
  • In-depth knowledge of business continuity and IT disaster recovery frameworks, methodologies, and industry best practices (e.g., ISO 22301, NIST SP 800-34).
  • Experience in guiding and assisting business functional leaders in developing and documenting business recovery strategies, with a proven ability to conduct deep and meaningful business process mapping and identification of interdependencies.
  • Familiarity with technology with a focus on systems recovery and change management processes.
  • Knowledge in coordinating business response to a planned/unplanned event that disrupts operations.
  • Able to work with technology team members to enable alignment between business continuity and technology disaster recovery plan.
  • Proven strategic leadership and relationship management capabilities, with experience with internal stakeholders — particularly senior and line-of-business management, as well as external parties such as counterparts in pension plans, business partners and business and IT service providers.
  • Enjoys working in a high demand environment, is flexible and constantly strives to innovate.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills with exceptional attention to detail. Proven competency in executing large projects, on-time and within budget, with business and IT personnel.
  • Able to support 24/7 on-call response.
  • Proven ability to work independently as well as to perform effectively in a team, metrics-oriented environment. Experience leading and managing high-performance multidisciplinary workgroups and teams as well as self-directed professionals to meet goals across multiple projects.
