Job Description

CGG’s Satellite Mapping business unit is a world-leading supplier of satellite imagery and elevation data, and innovative derived mapping and monitoring solutions.

Our technology and expertise transform satellite image pixels into actionable information, reducing risk and uncertainty across a variety of applications and markets including Oil & Gas, Mining, Engineering, Environment and Defence.

An exciting collection of new roles have been opened up that will support the development and operational roll-out of our next generation of solutions.

Reporting to the InSAR Technical Lead, the InSAR scientist will work within InSAR research and development (R&D), leading and contributing to a varied range of projects to ensure the team functions at a high technical level and maintains its world-leader status in ground deformation mapping. This will include tasks such as development of processing algorithms and workflows, investigation of new applications for SAR and InSAR data, and close collaboration with our GIS and data science teams.

In addition, the employee will provide support to the InSAR production team, applying their knowledge and experience to help with challenging or unusual projects and applications, supporting client communications and report writing, and mentoring less-experienced team members. They will assist with publishing results of their work through research journals, articles, international conferences and client seminars.

From a technical perspective the employee will work extensively with the GAMMA InSAR software and CGG Satellite Mapping’s proprietary processing algorithms and workflows. Initial training will focus on consolidating the employee’s existing InSAR knowledge and adding tailored opportunities to develop complementary skills, including practical hands-on mentoring to gain familiarity with GAMMA and proprietary algorithms as required.  

The successful delivery of our commercial projects is at the heart of the team’s success. Many of our projects are long-term monitoring studies that require excellent communication with our clients, attention to detail and a consistent quality of deliverables. We are a team that operate internationally, as such the individual will be expected to communicate efficiently and in an appropriate manner to clients from different countries and cultural backgrounds. Where necessary the individual will be expected to travel to help secure and manage projects, provide training, and present our work at international conferences.

CGG Satellite Mapping is based in Edenbridge, Kent, United Kingdom. During the COVID-19 pandemic all staff are home-based.

 

Qualifications

The successful candidate will be educated to PhD level (or equivalent relevant academic/commercial experience) in SAR, InSAR, geodesy, remote sensing, or a subject similarly applied and numerate. Previous experience with SAR and/or InSAR is essential, and familiarity with the GAMMA software is desirable.

The successful candidate will have scientific coding experience – preferably in python, or with another science-oriented language alongside enthusiasm to learn python. Additional experience in GIS and database coding environments (for example GDAL, SQL, PostGIS) and Git would be beneficial, along with general GIS skills.

Additional experience and skills which a candidate could bring to the role include Spanish language proficiency, mining sector experience, geotechnical and slope stability applications, SAR polarimetry and use of SAR for environmental or vegetation applications, data statistics (e.g. PCA, cluster analysis), machine learning, or complementary surveying methods such as terrestrial radar, GPS, levelling etc.

Written and verbal competency in English essential. Written and verbal competency in Spanish beneficial.
