Job Description
Panel buckling is one of the main sizing criteria for empennage structures. There are two approaches that can minimize panel size and avoid critical buckling behaviour: increasing the number of ribs or increasing the number of stringers.
The goal is to start from a generic empennage surface and perform trade-off analyses on the weight impact of each solution.
Design a configuraition with a minimum number of ribs and reduce the pitch, by increasing the number of ribs, until the Margins of Safety are positive.
Design an alternative configurations with the same baseline number of ribs, but with added stringers to the configuration, with the pitch being reduced until there are positive Margins of Safety.
Evaluate the weight difference between the two solutions.
Report on the weight, stresses and margins of safety for each solution.
