Full-stack Java Engineer (BE-CSS-CSA-2024-22-GRAP)

  • Full-time

Job Description

Your responsibilities

Are you a passionate Software Engineer? Are you ready to join a team where you will be given an opportunity to make a difference? Take an active role in the design and development of the software systems used to control CERN's state of the art particle accelerators. Join CERN's Controls Configuration, Settings and Automation team and realize your potential. Take part!

You will join:

  • The Beams department (BE), responsible for the beam generation, acceleration, diagnostics, controls and performance optimization for the LHC and its injector accelerators.
  • The Controls Software and Services group (CSS), which provides solutions for the control and monitoring of all of the CERN particle accelerators, their transfer lines, associated experimental areas and various supporting technical infrastructure services.
  • The Configuration, Settings and Automation section (CSA), which delivers solutions facilitating data management for logical and physical configuration of the controls systems, enables accelerator operations with mission-critical settings management systems, and makes it possible to automatize control of the accelerators with varied high-level software solutions. You will take a major role in re-engineering a high-level software service that is used to directly automate the operation of CERN's accelerators, including the LHC.

In this position, you will contribute to an exciting larger scale project to significantly improve the efficiency of accelerator operation. As such, you will get to collaborate with a variety of people working together at the heart of CERN.

Specifically, you will:

  • Become part of an agile and quality-oriented team of skilled software engineers providing solutions essential for the CERN Controls System;
  • Collaborate with experienced team members to review the existing automation solution, analyze, and design a new-generation solution based on the latest technologies used in the BE-CSS group;
  • Participate in the complete software development lifecycle (requirements, design, development, testing), following a modern agile approach;
  • Interact with operators, physicists, and software engineers to understand their needs and help translate these into appropriate software solutions.

Our foreseen technology stack for this project includes:

  • Java (Spring and Spring Boot eco-system, Spring Cloud);
  • ReST based APIs;
  • Front-end based on Angular;
  • DevOps and CI/CD with Gitlab, Ansible, Gradle and deployment on K8s.

Advantageous skills and experience:

  •  Experience in delivering software products, from the analysis stage to operations;
  • Experience working with Spring Boot, JPA;
  • Experience in designing and evolving client-oriented APIs, ideally based on ReST;
  • Experience using CI/CD solutions to build, test and provision software to operations;
  • A general interest in building and evolving robust, secure software components and tools.

Language skills:

  • Fluent in English, the ability to work in French would be an advantage.

Eligibility criteria:

About us

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.
