Survey Engineer (BE-GM-ESA-2023-186-LD)

  • Contract

Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description

Introduction

Join the Geodetic Metrology group at CERN, where you will take part in the metrology and alignment of a wide variety of components that are used in particle physics experiments. You will use state-of-the art surveying tools and software to achieve the sub-millimetre accuracy necessary to meet our goals. You will participate in the definition of the geodetic metrology strategy, and you will apply the alignment solutions for the upgrade of the CERN experiments, including the detectors of the CERN’s flagship accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Take part!

Functions

As a Survey Engineer integrated in the ESA (Experiment Surveying and Alignment) section in charge of the geodetic metrology and alignment of physics experiments, you will:

  • Coordinate and be responsible for the high precision survey activities of one of the LHC experiments and of several non-LHC experiments.
  • Implement adapted procedures and geodetic infrastructure, i.e., design and maintenance of geodetic networks in the experimental areas.
  • Carry out, and supervise, the geometrical measurements at all stages of the production of the components from assembly to installation in situ using standard geodetic 3D techniques as well as close range photogrammetry, or laser tracker techniques.
  • Be responsible for the data processing comprising advanced stochastic analysis, creation of documentation and presentation of the results.
  • Supervise and conduct "as built" measurements of experiment-related areas - such as assembly halls, caverns, etc. – using 3D laser scanning technology, and perform the pre-processing of the point cloud data, using the appropriate software, before their delivery to the Integration team.
  • Contribute actively to the R&D activities of the group related to alignment monitoring systems as well as participating in the development and maintenance of in-house surveying software applications.

Qualifications

Master's degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of land surveying, geomatics, topography, geodesy, photogrammetry, or metrology. or a related field.

Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience in the domain of high precision geodetic or industrial metrology including experience with associated instruments and methods used in this field.
  • Initial experience in the coordination, planning, reporting, and quality assurance aspects of project management.

Technical competencies:

  • Knowledge and application of high accuracy survey methods and tools: laser tracker, close range photogrammetry.
  • Use of survey instruments as total stations and 3D laser scanning.
  • Knowledge and practice of standard adjustment software: theories, concepts and algorithms related to the least square adjustment.
  • Knowledge and application of data acquisition and data processing software (i.e., Python, Matlab, Spatial Analyzer)
  • Organisation, planning and control: including supervision work

Behavioural competencies:

  • Communicating Effectively: Listening actively to others and letting others speak. Expressing opinions, ideas and suggestions with conviction and in a logical/structured manner; keeping to the point.
  • Achieving Results: Having a structured and organised approach towards work; being able to set priorities and plan tasks with results in mind. Delivering high quality work on time and fulfilling expectations. Delivering prompt and efficient service taking into account customer needs.
  • Solving Problems: Addressing complex problems by breaking them down into manageable components. Assimilating large quantities of information, identifying key issues and formulating conclusions clearly and concisely. Producing workable and timely solutions that meet requirements.
  • Working in Teams: Cooperating constructively with others in the pursuit of team goals; balancing personal goals with team goals. Working well in groups and readily fitting into a team; participating fully and taking an active role in team activities. Contributing to promoting a positive atmosphere in the team through an optimistic and constructive attitude; addressing issues.
  • Working in the Interest of the Organization: Behaving consistently with CERN's values and goals. Following rules and regulations and encouraging others to do the same. Demonstrating motivation for own work, being enthusiastic, involved and energetic in pursuing tasks.

Language skills:

Spoken and written English or French: ability to understand and speak the other language in professional contexts. Ability to draw-up technical specifications and/or scientific reports and to make oral presentations in at least one of the two languages.
