Job Description

Your responsibilities

CERN seeks a scientist/engineer to liaise between CMS and the CERN IT department, overseeing the virtual machine infrastructure and supporting CVMFS content. The role involves managing storage resources, quotas, coordinating with CMS computing and physics organizations. The candidate will handle resource allocations in the Openstack cloud, maintain an inventory of machines, and enhance automation tools. Strong organizational, communication, and Linux system administration skills are essential. Responsibilities include administering computing resources, provisioning new resources, maintaining OS configurations, and ensuring smooth coordination with CERN-IT staff

Skills and/or knowledge

  • Scientific data management and mass storage systems
  • Grid infrastructure and Grid technologies
  • Testing and troubleshooting distributed systems
  • Monitoring of distributed systems
  • User support or communication with large groups of internationally distributed colleagues
  • Knowledge of Python
  • Knowledge of DevOps tools such as Kubernetes, Docker, Git, Puppet
  • Knowledge of Linux and bash scripting
  • Experience of monitoring tools like Prometheus, Grafana and Opensearch
  • Usage of distributed computing infrastructures
  • Fluent in English, the ability to work in French would be an advantage.

Eligibility criteria:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • You have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Computer Science or Physics (or a related field) by the application deadline.
  • Your highest educational qualification is either a Bachelor's or Master's degree.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
  • Applicants without University degree are not eligible.
  • Applicants with a PhD are not eligible
