Mechanical Engineer – Ultrahigh Vacuum Systems (TE-VSC-BVO-2023-81-GRAP)

Job Description

You will join the Vacuum, Surfaces and Coatings Group, which is in charge of design, construction, operation, maintenance and upgrade of Large Hadron Collider (LHC) vacuum system. As a mechanical engineer, you will be part of the Experimental Vacuum team, responsible for the beam vacuum systems of the four LHC experiments (ATLAS, ALICE, CMS and LHCb).

Your main activities will include:

  • Designing complex and highly specialised beam vacuum equipment, including production and installation tooling.
  • Manufacturing follow-up, installation, and commissioning of beam vacuum system.
  • Participation in interventions in the LHC tunnel to upgrade and repair ultrahigh vacuum systems.
  • Participation in vacuum laboratory studies to validate vacuum components using residual gas analysis and dedicated simulation codes.

    Who we are looking for

      Eligibility criteria:

      • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
      • You have a professional background in Mechanical engineering (or a related field) and have either:
        • a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience;
        • or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.
      • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.

      Skills and/or knowledge

      • Experience with design of ultrahigh vacuum assemblies;
      • Strong hands-on experience in precise mechanics and ultrahigh vacuum domain;
      • Experience with leak detections and residual gas analysis;
      • Knowledge of CAD and CAE software;
      • Fluent in English, knowledge of French would be an advantage.
