Monte Carlo simulations and code developments (SY-STI-BMI-2023-13-GRAP)
- Full-time
Job Description
Your responsibilities
This position offers a twofold activity, combining radiation transport simulations for an energy-frontier muon collider with related code developments for the FLUKA package. Despite the promising potential of such a machine, the short lifetime of muons poses different technological challenges for the collider and interaction region design. In particular, the secondary showers induced by decay products give rise to high background levels in the detectors, which need to be mitigated by a sophisticated absorber configuration. In addition, the superconducting magnets of the collider ring need to be well protected against the shower-induced heat load and long-term radiation damage.
You will contribute to the absorber design for detectors and magnets by simulating the propagation of secondary showers in the machine. Moreover, you will be directly involved in the development of the FLUKA code, in particular for the aspects relevant to the aforementioned studies.
Your profile
Skills and/or knowledge
- Simulation of radiation environments;
- Knowledge of particle-matter interactions;
- Knowledge of programming techniques and languages;
- Knowledge of at least one Monte Carlo code (FLUKA, ...) is an asset.
Eligibility criteria:
- You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
- You have a professional background in Applied physics (or a related field) and have either:
- a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience;
- or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.
- You have never had a fellow or graduate contract before.

About us
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.
