Your responsibilities

In this role, you will join the Accelerator Systems Department (SY), more specifically the Beam Instruments Group, which is responsible for designing, building and maintaining the instruments that allow observation of the particle beams and the measurement of related parameters for all CERN accelerators and transfer lines. 
Join a team with consolidated experience in the filed of applied physics! 

You will: 

- develop an instrument for the measurement of the transverse beam profiles with high dynamic range for the qualification of the beam halo;
- be in charge of conducting a survey of possible techniques and evaluate the potentials and drawbacks for the case of the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC); 
- study in detail the most promising techniques; 
- depending on the outcome of the study: design of the instrument. 

Your profile

Skills and/or knowledge

  • Knowledge of electromagnetism, heat transfer, optics and interaction of particles with matter;
  • Experience in Data analysis and simulations;
  • Experience coding in Python;
  • Knowledge in the field of Accelerator physics would be an advantage. 
  • Fluent in English, the ability to work in French would be an advantage.

Eligibility criteria:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • You have a professional background in Applied physics/ industrial engineering (or a related field) and have either:
    • a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience;
    • or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.
  • You have never had a fellow or graduate contract before.

This position requires:

  • Work in Radiation Areas.
  • Interventions in underground installations.

  • A monthly stipend ranging between 6194 and 6808 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax).
