Job Description

Your responsibilities

 

You will be part of :

  • The Beams department, responsible for the beam generation, acceleration, diagnostics, controls and performance optimization for the LHC and its injector accelerators.
  • The Accelerator and Beam Physics Group, which is responsible for studying and understanding the beam dynamics over the complete CERN Accelerator Complex through theoretical, simulation and experimental studies. The group provides input and support for machine operations, devising settings and scenarios to optimize the machine performance. It is also responsible for working out concepts and ideas for future accelerators.

The project focuses on studies of collimation performance in High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). The High-Luminosity LHC will feature significantly higher intensity than the present LHC, and beam losses become more critical. In particular, you will: 
- study the collimation performance for HL-LHC running scenarios to ensure that beam losses can be handled safely;
- perform simulations to optimise settings, while staying compatible with impedance requirements and other basline developments;
- study the impact of beam failures on the collimation system; 
- test the concepts for future collimation with beam in machine development sessions in the LHC with main focus on proton collimation but also upcoming issues for ion collimation. 

 

Your profile

Skills and/or knowledge

  • Sound knowledge of accelerator physics and beam dynamics;
  • Previous experience in data analysis, physics computing, programming, or any experience using the MAD-X, X-Suite or SixTrack software would be an advantage
  • Fluent in English, the ability to work in French would be an advantage.

Eligibility criteria:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • You have a professional background in Physique (or a related field) and have either:
    • a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience;
    • or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
