Electronics Technician (SY-BI-BL-2023-75-LD)

  • Contract

Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description

Introduction

Are you a motivated technician in the field of electronics who is passionate about building, maintaining and testing the complex electronics required to operate accelerators at the high energy frontier? Take Part!

You will join the Accelerator Systems Department (SY), which is responsible for the beam-related technical systems of the CERN accelerators. The SY teams design, build and operate equipment systems in all CERN accelerators, and are engaged in ambitious forward-looking R&D programmes.

The position will be in the Beam Loss monitoring Section of the Beam Instrumentation Group (SY-BI-BL).

You will take part in designing, manufacturing and commissioning of the beam loss monitoring system for the charged particle beams that are operated daily in the CERN accelerator complex. With more than 5000 monitors, this is the largest beam instrumentation system in operation at CERN. Beam loss monitors are designed to measure lost particles with a dynamic range of 9 orders of magnitude. The system is the backbone of the CERN accelerator machine protection system, which requires beam loss monitors to be conceived to operate with the best possible reliability and availability.

Functions

Your main task will be to build, test, install and maintain the electronic systems used to monitor the particle beams throughout the entire CERN accelerator complex.

In close collaboration with the experts of the team, you will:

  • Participate in the production, assembly, testing and installation of electronic acquisition systems and their related cabling infrastructure for instrumentation used to optimize the performance of the LHC and its injector chain;
  • Maintain the electronic components of beam instrumentation systems throughout the CERN accelerator complex;
  • Write up detailed test procedure documentation as well as test reports;
  • Participate in fault-finding and corrective interventions.

Qualifications

Higher technical diploma or equivalent relevant experience in the field of electronics or electro-mechanics or a related field.

Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience as a technician in the field of electronics or electro-mechanics;
  • Demonstrated experience in the production, installation and/or maintenance of electronic systems;
  • Familiarity with schematic design tools for printed circuit boards;
  • Design of simple analogue and/or digital circuits;
  • Knowledge of at least one tool for CAD 2D design would be an asset.

Technical competencies:

  • Assembly of electronic crates, racks and cabinets
  • Assembly of electronic components
  • Design, construction, test and installation of electromechanical equipment and systems;
  • Manufacturing and assembly of custom cables, including connectors, using industrial standards;
  • Testing and measurement of analogue electronic circuits.

Behavioural competencies:

  • Achieving results: delivering high quality work on time and fulfilling expectations; taking appropriate corrective actions and adapting work / project plans if necessary.
  • Working in teams: building and maintaining constructive and effective work relationships; working well in groups and readily fitting into a team; participating fully and taking an active role in team activities.
  • Demonstrating flexibility: adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements.
  • Solving problems: identifying, defining and assessing problems, taking action to address them.
  • Communicating effectively: ensuring that information, procedures and decisions are appropriately documented.

Language skills:

  • Spoken and written English or French: ability to understand and speak the other language in routine situations.
  • Willingness to acquire knowledge of the other language rapidly.
