Job Description

The Engineering Department (EN) pushes back the limits of technology so that physicists can carry out their research. Within the Mechanical and Materials Engineering (MME) Group of the EN department, you will join the Materials, Metrology and Ndt (MM) Section.

The future of particle accelerators is inevitably and strongly linked to the development of high field magnets that enable higher energies and higher luminosity to be attained. CERN is currently developing several Nb3Sn-based magnets for the High-Luminosity upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). The fabrication of Nb3Sn magnets is a challenging process as it requires to manage the brittleness of the conductors. In order to investigate the root causes of performance limitation or degradation, an innovative methodology of investigations of the root causes has been developed.

As materials engineer, you will work on advanced material investigations of superconducting cables and conductors for accelerator magnets for the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) project.

You will will be involved in the failure analysis, following an approach based on a sequence of mesoscale observations through advanced non-destructive testing by an innovative high energy linac X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) technique, followed by materialographic assessment using advanced techniques to analyze strands damage, as well as the glass fibre/resin system.

 

Qualifications

Eligibility criteria:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State;
  • You have a Master’s degree and between 2 and 6 years’ experience or PhD with up to 3 years of relevant experience in Materials Science and Engineering or other related field;
  • You should have a working knowledge of English or French.

Skills and/or knowledge:

  • General material science, knowledge of superconductors would be an asset
  • Advanced materials investigations techniques (Scanning Electron Microscopy, Focused Ion Beam, X-ray Diffraction, Optical and digital microscopy, image analysis
  • Failure analysis
  • Micromechanical testing of materials, nanoindentation
  • Non-destructive examinations (including Computed Tomography) would be an asset

 

Additional Information

What we offer: 

  • An employment contract of in principle 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months;
  • On-the-job and formal training at CERN as well as in-house language courses for English and/or French;
  • A monthly stipend ranging between 6050 and 6650 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax);
  • Coverage by CERN’s comprehensive health scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund;
  • Depending on your individual circumstances: installation grant; family, child and infant allowances; payment of travel expenses at the beginning and end of contract;
  • 30 days of paid leave per year.
