Mechanical Engineer – Design, Analysis and Construction of Particle Detectors (EP-ADE-TK-2022-109-LD)

  • Contract

Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description

Introduction

Are you an experienced, hands-on mechanical engineer with a passion for cutting-edge technology and precision assemblies? Then seize this opportunity and join CERN’s Experimental Physics (EP) Department, where you will take part in the development and construction of the next generation of particle detectors.

The CERN ATLAS Team plays a major role in the construction of the future silicon ATLAS Inner Tracker (ITk). In particular, the CERN team focuses on the development of the Pixel Outer Barrel. These activities include the design, prototyping and assembly of the support structures as well as the final detector integration and testing.

Functions

As a mechanical engineer in the CERN ATLAS Detector Team, you will join the Tracker section (EP-ADE-TK). Your functions in the design and construction of the ATLAS ITk Pixel Outer Barrel will include:

  • Participate in the conception and detailed design of detector components and assembly tooling for the construction of the ITk Pixel Outer Barrel.
  • Develop complex finite element models and perform analytical calculations to verify the design of detector components and tooling according to the relevant standards and best engineering practices.
  • Prepare technical specifications for detector components and tools, following up their production, acceptance and installation.
  • Participate hands-on in the prototyping and testing of detector materials and components.
  • Develop, document and implement test procedures for detector components and assemblies.
  • Support the assembly, installation and testing of detector components as required.

Qualifications

Master's degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of mechanical or aerospace engineering or a related field.

Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience in the use of analytical methods and commercial finite element software for the analysis of structural, thermal and dynamic problems. Proficiency in Ansys FEA is essential for this post.
  • Proven experience in the design of components, assemblies and tooling for high energy physics experiments.
  • Demonstrated experience in the use of CAD software for 3D modelling. Proficiency in Catia V5 is essential for this post.
  • Demonstrated experience in the production of 2D technical drawings according to the relevant standards for dimensioning and tolerances (e.g. ISO Geometrical Product Specifications, GPS).
  • Experience in the design and analysis of composite materials and lightweight structures. Proficiency in Ansys/ACP is essential for this post.
  • Proven experience in mechanical and thermal testing of materials and lightweight composite structures. Hands-on experience with electromechanical or hydraulic tensile testing machines and digital image correlation equipment would be advantageous.

Experience in the following areas would be considered an asset:

  • Experience in the design and verification of components according to international standards for metallic structures (e.g. EN Eurocodes).
  • Knowledge of fracture mechanics concepts.
  • Experience writing technical reports, specifications and engineering documentation.

Technical competencies:

  • Design and analysis of mechanical structures
  • Knowledge and application of numerical modelling in solid mechanics and in heat transfer (proficiency in finite element analysis using Ansys).
  • Production of 2D drawings and 3D models (proficiency in Catia V5, ISO dimensioning and tolerancing).
  • Knowledge and application of non-metallic composites.
  • Knowledge and application of mechanical and thermal testing.

Behavioural competencies:

  • Learning and sharing knowledge: proposing ways to improve or streamline existing procedures, processes and methodologies. Sharing knowledge and expertise freely and willingly with others; coaching others to ensure knowledge transfer.
  • Achieving results: delivering high quality work on time and fulfilling expectations; being rigorous and producing quality results at first attempt.
  • Demonstrating flexibility: adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements.
  • Working in teams: working well in groups and readily fitting into a team; participating fully and taking an active role in team activities; contributing to promoting a positive atmosphere in the team through an optimistic and constructive attitude; addressing issues.
  • Solving problems: addressing complex problems by breaking them down into manageable components Producing workable and timely solutions that meet requirements.

Language skills:

Spoken and written English or French. Ability to understand and speak at least one of the two languages in a professional context. Ability to draw-up technical specifications and/or scientific reports and to make oral presentations in at least one of the two languages, and an undertaking to acquire the other language rapidly.
