Mechanical Systems Engineer (BE-EA-EC-2022-98-LD)

  • Contract

Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description

Introduction

Are you interested in the challenges of designing, operating and maintaining reliable mechanical complex systems? Do you want to participate in the consolidation and upgrade of beam intercepting devices  to cope with the most demanding requirements of forefront physics experiments? Take a leading role in the lifecycle of critical equipment. Take part!

As a Mechanical Systems Engineer you will join:

The Beams (BE) Department that provides CERN with the specific competencies required for the conception, design, survey, alignment, control and operation of accelerators, accelerator test facilities, secondary beam lines and experimental areas.

The Experimental Areas (EA) Group which is responsible for planning and coordinating all activities in the CERN Experimental Areas and associated facilities. The Group provides support to the diverse experiments that use the CERN accelerator complex, in particular their preparation, integration, installation, and operation, as well as the design, installation, and maintenance of the beam transport lines used to provide the array of particles required for these experiments.

Functions

As a Mechanical Systems engineer within the EA Group of the BE Department, you will:

  • Participate in projects from their definition to installation.
  • Design, integrate, and follow-up the procurement, production and installation of complex mechanical, electro-mechanical and mechatronics systems.
  • Write engineering specifications and produce conceptual designs ensuring they satisfy user needs by communicating effectively with physicists, engineers and technicians.
  • Review the operation and maintenance of existing systems, assessing their performance and where necessary proposing performance enhancing solutions.
  • Apply engineering principles in areas such as remote handling concepts and waste optimisation.

  • Proven experience with design and integration tools.
  • Proven experience working with safety norms (RCC-MX or EUROCODE, PED).
  • Demonstrated success in the application of engineering science and technology at a research or industrial environment. This includes applying principles, techniques and procedures on equipment design and construction of prototypes or series.
  • Initial experience in project management: planning and scheduling, costing and budgeting, project risk management, project progress monitoring.
  • Experience in vacuum system design and calculations.

Technical competencies:

  • Knowledge and use of standard vacuum components and piping
  • Design and analysis of machines: use of CATIA, ANSYS or their equivalent.
  • Knowledge and application of manufacturing methods and work preparation.
