Radiation Effects Engineer (BE-CEM-EPR-2022-86-LD)

  • Contract

Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description

Introduction

Have you ever wanted to be involved in the CERN process for qualifying electronics to be installed in the CERN accelerators? CERN irradiation facilities are used to test and qualify electronics and systems in harsh environment like the one in the CERN accelerators. If you relish a challenge, join CERN' s Electronics Production and Radiation Tolerance section and realize your potential. Take part!

You will join the Beams Department (BE), the Controls Electronics and Mechatronics Group (CEM), and in particular the Electronics Production and Radiation Tolerance section (EPR), responsible for the Electronics Radiation Effects Monitoring  in the CERN accelerator complex and for the coordination, dosimetry, and operation of the CERN electronics radiation test facilities of CHARM (CERN High Energy Accelerator Mixed-field facility) and CC60 (CERN Cobalt-60 facility).

Functions

As a Radiation Effects Engineer in the CEM Group, you will coordinate, plan, provide the dosimetry and the user support of the two CERN radiation facilities: CHARM and CC60. These facilities are used to qualify components and systems used in the CERN accelerator complex in harsh radiation environment. In addition, you will take the responsibility for the monitoring of radiation effects on the electronics in the CERN accelerator complex.

More in particular, you will:

  • Coordinate, oversee, plan and organize all the activities in CHARM and CC60 facilities.
  • Provide technical support to the users in terms of radiation effects and dosimetry.
  • Ensure compliance with safety procedures and keep updated safety files in collaboration with the CERN Safety Unit.
  • Design and implement electronics testbenches for radiation effects characterization of components and systems.
  • Participate in beam steering activities and provide support to the operation with the instruments available in the facilities (e.g. secondary emission chambers, ionization chambers, Beam Loss Monitors, beam position monitors).
  • Take the responsibility for the design, production, acceptance tests, operation and maintenance of the Radiation Monitoring System (a CERN system known as “RadMon”) in the CERN accelerators and in the radiation facilities, with particular focus on the electronics and data acquisition aspects.
  • Take care of the R&D activities related to the development of new dosimeter sensors for electronics radiation effects and follow up their calibration in relevant radiation facilities.

Qualifications

Master's degree or PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of electronic engineering, radiation effects or a related field.

Experience:

  • Extensive experience with coordination of radiation facilities.
  • Extensive experience with electronic measurements systems, data analysis and reporting.
  • Extensive experience with components and/or systems radiation qualification tests.
  • Experience with radiation dosimetry measurements and sensors.
  • Experience with analogue and/or digital electronic circuit design and testing.
  • Experience with FPGA and System On Chip (SoC) programming is an asset.

Technical competencies:

  • Knowledge of radiation effects on electronics and mitigation techniques: and radiation environment.
  • Knowledge and application of instrumentation and measurement techniques.
  • Knowledge of programming techniques and languages: Python and LabVIEW.
  • Analog and digital circuit testing and measurement techniques.
  • Configuration, implementation, installation, operation and maintenance of data-acquisition software.

Behavioural competencies:

  • Communicating effectively: expressing opinions, ideas and suggestions with conviction and in a logical/structured manner; keeping to the point.
  • Solving problems: identifying, defining and assessing problems, taking action to address them.
