Introduction

Are you interested in the challenges of designing, operating and maintaining complex fluidic systems for particle physics detectors? Do you want to participate in the development of the next generation CO2 cooling systems to cope with the most demanding requirements of the HL-LHC experiments? Take part!

You will join:

  • The Experimental Physics Department.
  • The Detector Technologies (DT) group, which participates in the development, construction and operation of particle detectors for experiments at CERN. This comprises detector consolidation and upgrade projects as well as infrastructure and services for experiments.
  • The Fluidic Systems Section is charged to design, prototype, construct, commission, operate and maintain fluidic systems (gas & cooling) for detectors in CERN experiments. In particular the section is requested to launch in production the new CO2 cooling systems for the Phase 2 upgrades of the ATLAS and CMS experiments, and to complete their installation and commissioning in connection with the detectors by the end of Long Shutdown 3.

Functions

As Mechanical Engineer in the Fluidic Systems Section, initially you will:

  • Play a key role in the update and maintenance of the process for the final CO2 detector cooling systems for the Phase 2 upgrades of ATLAS and CMS. This includes supporting the Project Leader in the selection and procurement of the required components.
  • Participate in the design, construction, and testing of the CO2 cooling systems for the Phase 2 upgrades of the ATLAS and CMS experiments.
  • Perform and oversee parametric process simulations related to the projects under design, including full control mirroring for the planned implementation of virtual commissioning.

At a later stage, you will:

  • Contribute to the follow-up of the outsourced construction of the ATLAS and CMS cooling systems.
  • Participate in the commissioning and operation of CO2 cooling systems, including participation in the section stand-by duty service.
  • Participate in the innovation effort of the section toward cooling systems for future detector upgrades.

Qualifications

Master's degree or PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Mechanical Engineering or a related field.

Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience in process design of complex fluidic systems (preferably CO2 cooling systems).
  • Proven practice in mechanical and/or thermal calculations.
  • Experience in operation and maintenance of detector cooling systems.
  • Experience in participating in projects involving multiple academic and/or industrial partners.

Technical competencies:

  • Knowledge and application of thermal and/or fluid measurement techniques: with emphasis on refrigeration systems.
  • Design, analysis and optimization of thermal systems.
  • Design, construction, operation and maintenance of detector cooling systems: with focus on low temperature CO2 cooling systems.

Behavioural competencies:

Language skills:

Employment Conditions

Contract type: Limited duration contract (5 years). Subject to certain conditions, holders of limited-duration contracts may apply for an indefinite position.

  • Work in Radiation Areas.
  • Work during nights, Sundays and official holidays.
  • Interventions in underground installations.
  • A valid driving licence is required.
