Computing Fellowship: DevOps Engineer

  • Full-time

Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Diversity has been an integral part of CERN's mission since its foundation and is an established value of the organisation.

Job Description

The IT Platforms Infrastructure section provides platforms for deployment, hosting and operation of web-sites and web-applications.

We have recently deployed OKD4, the OpenShift Kubernetes Distribution, to support CERN's web hosting services (self-service application templates, general-purpose web site hosting, Drupal content-management systems) and provide the Platform-as-a-Service infrastructure for more than 1000 custom web applications. The infrastructure is managed in an agile fashion with Gitops (Helm, ArgoCD) and makes heavy use of Kubernetes operators (written in Golang) to integrate with the CERN computing environment.

We are looking for a DevOps engineer to further develop the OKD4 infrastructure and in particular:

  • Identify areas for improvement and desirable new functionality with the PaaS user community;
  • Provide support for owners of web sites and applications and ensure a great user experience;
  • Develop/improve the toolkit for PaaS users;
  • Further integrate PaaS with the CERN computing environment, e.g. in the areas of monitoring and reporting on resource usage;
  • Implement CERN security team's recommendations regarding application templates, e.g. cataloguing, reporting and automated updates of instances.
