The Horizon Europe project OpenWebSearch.EU “Piloting a Cooperative Open Web Search Infrastructure to Support Europe's Digital Sovereignty” proposes to develop and pilot the core of a European Open Web Index (OWI) and the foundation of an open and extensible European open Web Search and Analysis Infrastructure (OWSAI).

You will mainly;  

• develop a core suite of search, discovery and analytics services to create, maintain and utilize the OWI;
• develop relevant search engine verticals and new search paradigms demonstrating the impact of the OWI;
• establish a network of European HPC-infrastructure, research and business organisations to pilot the OWSAI based on Europe’s values, principles, legislation, ethics and standards and to stimulate an Ecosystem around the OWI.  

CERN will lead Work Package 5 “Federated Data Infrastructure”, for the development of and provisioning of the federated computer and storage infrastructure. CERN will furthermore contribute to several other work packages, and in particular, to WP1 “Resource Efficient Collaborative Crawling.  The selected fellow will work on the design, implementation and operation of a core suite of search, discovery and analytics services to create, maintain and utilize the European Open Web Index

Eligibility criteria

• You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State;
• You have a Bachelor or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or other related field;
• You have no more than 4 years’ experience after completing your highest diploma.

Essential skills and experience:

• Developing production-level web services using Python;
• Integration of backend and frontend web services (ReactJS);
• Version control (git) and collaborative platforms (GitHub, GitLab) to develop software;
• Passionate about software development and building and evolving robust, secure, well-tested software components and tools;
• You enjoy working in a small agile software development team building practical solutions in close collaboration with users and external partners.

Experience in one or more of the following would be an asset:

• Container technologies (Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift/OKD);
• Relational and document-based databases (PostgreSQL, ElasticSearch);
• Basic knowledge of Linux system administration.

In return, CERN will provide you with:

• An employment contract for between 6 months (minimum) up to 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months.
• A stipend ranging from 5,321 to 6,606 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax).
• Coverage by CERN’s comprehensive health scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund.
• Depending on your individual circumstances: an installation grant, family, child and infant allowances as well as travel expenses to and from Geneva.
• 2.5 days of paid leave per month.
