Senior Fellowship: DC/DC Converter Engineer

  • Full-time

Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Diversity has been an integral part of CERN's mission since its foundation and is an established value of the organisation.

Job Description

Are you a power design engineer with experience in DC/DC converters? Would you like to contribute to developing a radiation hard power distribution scheme for High Energy Physics experiments?

We are seeking to consolidate our team, which develops and brings to production readiness DC/DC converters.

Join us and participate to all the phases of the full-custom R&D cycle: from architecture choice, schematic and layout design of PCB for efficiency and low mass optimization to the full electrical, reliability and radiation test characterization.

We are working on the design of a family of radiation-hard DC/DC converters from a 48V input voltage down to the 0.9V-1.2V required by the experiment electronics. The converters currently under development are state of the art Point of Load regulators. The first uses GaN devices working in the Mhz range for the 48V to 12V, >100W conversion, while the second is a fully integrated solution (designed in a 28nm CMOS technology, all the passives are included on chip) and operates at 200MHz for the 5V to 0.9V conversion.

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • You have a Master’s degree or PhD in Electronics Engineering, Power Electronics or other related field; at least 4 years’ relevant experience since the completion of your MSc (or the equivalent diploma which gives access to doctoral programmes), and in both cases a maximum limit of 10 years’ experience after completion of your MSc.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Experience with DC/DC converters circuit design or power management;
  • Experience leading and driving PCB design development (including schematic and layout);
  • Knowledge of and experience with PCB CAD tool (Altium or other);
  • Hands-on experience with debugging and related equipment (Oscilloscope, Multimeters, etc.)

Experience in the following fields will also be valued

  • Use of GaN technologies for power distribution circuits;
  • Reliability testing of power distribution electronic components;

Please note that CERN Staff members are not eligible to apply for a Fellowship.

Additional Information

CERN would very much like to benefit from your expertise, commitment and passion.

In return, CERN will provide you with:

  • An employment contract for between 6 months (minimum) up to 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months.
  • A stipend ranging from 7,223 to 8,203 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax).
  • Coverage by CERN’s comprehensive health scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund.
  • Depending on your individual circumstances: an installation grant, family, child and infant allowances as well as travel expenses to and from Geneva.
  • 2.5 days of paid leave per month.
