Mechanical Technician (TE-MSC-LMF-2022-36-LD)

  • Contract

Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description

Introduction

Join a great team pushing the limits of superconducting accelerator magnets, to shape the future of CERN largest accelerator. Take part!

You will join:

The Magnets, Superconductors and Cryostats (MSC) group of the Technology Department (TE) has the mandate to design, construct and measure the superconducting and normal conducting Magnets for the CERN accelerator complex, to integrate them in the CERN accelerator complex, to design and procure the magnet cryostats and to perform the magnet quality control. The group also provides support to operation of the accelerators for magnets, magnet performance, devices (current leads).

The LMF section manages the Large superconducting Magnets Facility. Its main responsibility is to provide a CERN-wide support for the engineering, manufacturing and maintenance of superconducting accelerator magnets, in particular for the LHC and its upgrades.

Functions

As a hands-on mechanical technician in the LMF section, you will take part in the work related to superconducting coil fabrication and assembly of superconducting magnets, in particular production activities on small series, within a tight QA/QC (Quality Assurance/Quality Control) framework.

In particular, you will:

  • Manufacture Nb3Sn superconducting coils, including cable respooling, winding and curing, preparation for reaction, splicing, preparation for impregnation and finishing.
  • Participate to magnet assembly and disassembly activities.
  • Carry out acceptance tests on coil related parts and tooling, such as visual inspection and standard dimensional controls.
  • Contribute to the development and construction of tooling, jigs and mock-ups related to coil or magnet fabrication, including conventional machining of components and fitting of assemblies.
  • Place orders with the CERN central warehouse and/or other external suppliers for consumables and other material / tooling related to coil or magnet fabrication.
  • If needed, participate to activities relate to the LHC accelerator, for example for the preparation of consolidation campaigns in the tunnel, or the removal / installation of superconducting magnets in the machine.
  • Making sure that all necessary safety measures are taken in the workshop.

Qualifications

Higher technical diploma or equivalent relevant experience in the field of mechanical engineering or a related field.

Experience:

The experience required for this post is:

  • Proven experience in one or several of the following fields:
    • manufacture of mechanical or electromechanical systems
    • mechanical assembly and fitting
    • basic mechanical metrology (dial gauges, feeler gauges, Vernier calipers, micrometers, vertical measuring column)
    • machining of metalling parts (traditional, non-CNC milling and turning)
  • Proven experience in reading technical drawings; experience of design of toolings or control jigs (including 3D CAD) would be an advantage.
  • Initial experience in soldering, brazing, welding would be an asset.
  • Experience with manufacturing superconducting coils, magnets or similar equipment would be beneficial.

Technical competencies:

  • Knowledge and application of manufacturing methods and work preparation
  • Assembly of mechanical structures and equipment.
  • Knowledge and application of conventional dimensional metrology.
  • Manufacturing of mechanical parts: with conventional (non-CNC) machine-tools and custom-made tools.
  • Construction of electromechanical equipment / superconducting magnets.

Behavioural competencies:

  • Working in teams: cooperating constructively with others in the pursuit of team goals; balancing personal goals with team goals. Working well in groups and readily fitting into a team; participating fully and taking an active role in team activities
  • Demonstrating accountability: taking responsibility for own actions and decisions
  • Demonstrating flexibility: adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements
  • Achieving results: having a structured and organised approach towards work; being able to set priorities and plan tasks with results in mind

Language skills:

Spoken and written English or French: ability to understand and learn/speak French in routine situations is important.
