Maintenance Technician (TTE Programme)

  • Full-time

Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Diversity has been an integral part of CERN's mission since its foundation and is an established value of the Organization.

Job Description

The Occupational Health & Safety and Environmental Protection unit (HSE) support the Organization in the implementation and enforcement of its Safety Policy. It monitors the application and accomplishment of Safety objectives aimed at a continuous improvement of safe working and operating conditions, as well as environmental protection.

As part of the HSE unit, the Radiation Protection group (HSE-RP) and the Environmental Protection group (HSE-ENV) ensure that personnel on CERN sites, the public, and the environment are protected from potentially harmful effects of ionising radiation linked to CERN activities.

Within the HSE-RP Unit, the IL Section (Instrumentation and Logistics) is responsible for all technical issues related to the instrumentation employed by the two units. The primary role of the IL section is the design, procurement, installation, commissioning and maintenance of portable and fixed installation radiation monitoring systems for CERN accelerators, experimental areas and the environment.

As a Maintenance Technician and member of the IL section, after an on-the-job training period provided by experienced colleagues, you will participate in performing a wide variety of activities related to radiation protection instrumentation, electronics and control systems. These include assisting in the following forms of maintenance activities:

  • Preventive: ranging from routine monthly operations to intensive 5 yearly calibration campaigns;
  • Breakdown:  provide support to first line interventions teams to resolve onsite issues, with a goal of minimising equipment down times and avoiding impact to accelerator or physics operations whilst maintaining safety integrity;
  • Corrective: support in the deployment of software and hardware upgrades across all sites.

CMMS management:

  • Participate in the management of the CMMS tool deployment by supporting users on the preparation, implementation, and daily use of the tool;
  • Support the Maintenance Manager in identifying and preparing points to improve the CMMS tool;
  • Document maintenance best practices.

In addition, you will take part in the preparation of documentation for the design, operation, and maintenance of equipment or systems ensuring all maintenance documentation is kept up to date. You will also provide support to project teams for the installation, cabling, commissioning and acceptance of new radiation protection systems.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for a place on the programme you will need to meet the following requirements:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member State or Associate Member State (https://home.cern/about/member-states);
  • You have a Technical Diploma or equivalent (careers.cern/ttediplomas), and no more than 4 years' relevant experience after finishing your diploma;
  • If you are currently studying, you are still eligible to apply, although you are expected to have obtained your qualification by the start of your appointment at CERN;
  • If you hold a BSc or MSc, you are not eligible. However, you may be eligible for the Fellowship Programme.
  • You should have at least a working knowledge of English OR French.

Specific requirements for the role:

  • Basic knowledge of the principles of maintenance management and its associated tools;
  • Experience, or knowledge of, one of the following fields: instrumentation and control, equipment maintenance, low voltage electricity, or electro-mechanics.
  • Knowledge of control systems and process automation (desirable);
  • Knowledge of radiation protection equipment, tools and procedures (desirable);
  • Knowledge of the principles for other technical disciplines such as electrical, mechanical, operations, civil engineering, cooling & ventilation, etc. (desirable);

Training value:

  • Working with large scale distributed control systems;
  • Maintenance operations and management;
  • Project installation and management;
  • Radiation protection instrumentation.

Additional Information

CERN would very much like to benefit from your expertise, commitment and passion.  In return, CERN will provide you with:

  • An employment contract of one year, renewable for a second year;
  • On-the-job and formal training at CERN as well as in-house language courses for English and/or French;
  • A monthly stipend of 4599 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax);
  • Coverage by CERN’s comprehensive health scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund;
  • Depending on your individual circumstances: an installation grant, family, child and infant allowances as well as travel expenses to and from Geneva;
  • 2,5 days of paid leave per month.

This is how you can apply:

You will need the following documents, clearly labelled (e.g. “CV”, “Motivation letter”, “Academic transcript”, etc.) and in PDF format to complete your application:

  • A CV;
  • Your latest relevant qualification (or a screenshot of the latest academic transcript obtained if the diploma is not yet obtained);
  • At least one reference letter (from a professor or previous employer) giving an overview of your academic and/or professional achievements. This should be as broad as possible.
    • You can upload these letters at the time of application if you have them to hand. You will also be provided with a link as soon as you have submitted your application to forward to your referees to upload their letters confidentially. Please note this must be done before the closing date.
