Computing Fellowship: Full-Stack Java Engineer

  • Full-time

Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Diversity has been an integral part of CERN's mission since its foundation and is an established value of the Organization.

Job Description

Are you a passionate Software Engineer or want to become one? Take an active role in the design and development of the control systems used by the CERN installation, operation and maintenance teams to model, manage, operate, and analyze the behavior of the particle accelerators. Join CERN’s Controls Configuration, Settings and Automation team and realize your potential. Take Part!

In this position you will join Configuration, Settings and Automation section, which delivers services and solutions facilitating data management and configuration of the controls systems, enables accelerators operations with mission-critical settings management systems, and makes it possible to automate control of the accelerators with varied high-level software solutions. The section is part of Controls Software and Services, the core group providing high-level controls software for CERN accelerators.

As a Software Engineer, you will be a member of a team focused on providing and evolving a mission-critical software system dedicated to control of the CERN Experimental Areas. In this position you will have an opportunity to take part in the design and development of a new generation system by:

  • Participating in the whole software development lifecycle (requirements, design, development, testing), following a modern agile approach;
  • Communicating with the end-users of the services to understand their needs and help translate these into appropriate software solutions;
  • Interacting with skilled and motivated software engineers on a daily basis to deliver quality results.

Our technology stack for this new project includes:

  • Java (Spring and Spring Boot eco-system, Spring Cloud), possible Python APIs;
  • ReST based APIs.
  • Oracle DBMS (with Spring JPA).
  • DevOPs and CI/CD with Gitlab, Ansible, Gradle and possible containerization.
  • Front-end stack possibly based on Angular and/or Jupyter notebooks.

Qualifications

Eligibility criteria

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State;
  • You have a bachelor or master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or other related fields;
  • You have no more than 4 years’ experience after completing your highest diploma.

Essential skills and experience

  • Experience in Java application development using Spring;
  • Ability to work with relational databases (SQL);
  • Experience in designing and evolving client-oriented APIs, ideally based on ReST;
  • Experience applying software quality assurance techniques and practice with corresponding tools.

Desired skills and experience

  • Experience working with Spring Boot, JPA.
  • Experience working with CI/CD solutions in order to build, test and provision software to operations.
  • Knowledge of front-end development (Angular and XHTML, CSS, web technologies, Python based GUIs) is welcomed.
  • Interest in software development and building and evolving robust, secure software components and tools.

Please note that CERN Staff members are not eligible to apply for a Fellowship.

Additional Information

CERN would very much like to benefit from your expertise, commitment and passion.  In return, CERN will provide you with:

  • An employment contract for between 6 months (minimum) up to 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months.
