Job Description

At the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), we process 24/7 proton and ions collisions on more than 300 thousands cpu cores spread over more than 50 computing centres world wide.

You will be part of a small and dynamic devops team of engineers and physicists at CERN, in the CMS experiment. Some of the technologies we use are the HTCondor batch system software, High Throughput Computing, heterogeneous platforms, the Python programming language and the Puppet configuration management. We are also working with Cloud and HPC facilities, too.

You will.

  • Monitor, maintain, and help to evolve the software layer that allows CMS to submit its data processing and analysis jobs world wide;
  • Interact directly with the development communities of the software packages at the core of our stack, GlideinWMS and HTCondor, as well as any software packages we may adopt in the future;
  • Provide essential feedback to the developers, inherent to the success of the software projects, through our testing, integration, and prioritization of new features of their product.

Qualifications

Eligibility criteria

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State;
  • You have a Bachelor or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or other related field;
  • You have no more than 4 years’ experience after completing your highest diploma.

Essential skills and experience

  • Professional experience with Linux service administration and management;
  • Professional experience with Python and Shell scripting;
  • Knowledge of the basics of the functioning of a batch system.

Desired skills and experience

  • Experience with distributed computing or HPC;
  • Experience with high throughput computing on Grid/Cloud;
  • Experience with Puppet (or similar configuration management);
  • Experience with software development and code design.

Please note that CERN Staff members are not eligible to apply for a Fellowship.

In return, CERN will provide you with:

  • An employment contract for between 6 months (minimum) up to 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months.
  • A stipend ranging from 5,321 to 6,606 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax).
  • Coverage by CERN’s comprehensive health scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund.
  • Depending on your individual circumstances: an installation grant, family, child and infant allowances as well as travel expenses to and from Geneva.
  • 2.5 days of paid leave per month.
