Job Description

The ALICE experiment is finalizing a major upgrade and will restart its operations in 2022. A key element of this upgrade is a new computing system in order to handle a data volume roughly 100 times larger than during the previous operational period.

As part of the upgrade, a brand new web-based system is being developed to provide the ALICE collaboration centralized access to all metadata related to scientific and operational activities, produce reports for operational teams and management and globally support the ALICE data taking activities in the experimental site.

As a member of a small and dynamic team working in the CERN Experimental Physics department, you will :

  • Contribute to the development and operation of this new system;
  • Design, develop, and deploy new features that enable and make it easier for researchers and managers to retrieve;
  • Verify and access the data they need;
  • Work with relational databases and modern web technologies such as NodeJS, ES6 Javascript, web components, virtual DOM and autoredraw.

Qualifications

Eligibility criteria

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State;
  • You have a Bachelor or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or other related field;
  • You have no more than 4 years’ experience after completing your highest diploma.

Essential skills and experience

  • Development of web-based user interfaces;
  • Programming techniques and languages: JavaScript, NodeJS, Express;
  • Knowledge of Linux operating system.

Desired skills and experience

  • Software life-cycle tools and procedures: Git, Mocha, Puppeteer, Continuous Integration;
  • Relational databases, in particular MySQL or MariaDB;
  • Gathering user requirements and providing user support.

In return, CERN will provide you with:

  • An employment contract for between six months (minimum) up to a maximum of 36 months;
  • A stipend ranging from 5,321 to 6,606 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax);
  • Coverage by CERN’s comprehensive health scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund;
  • Depending on your individual circumstances: an installation grant, family, child and infant allowances as well as travel expenses to and from Geneva;
  • 2.5 days of paid leave per month.
