Computing Fellowship: Software Engineer (Python)

  • Full-time

Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Diversity has been an integral part of CERN's mission since its foundation and is an established value of the organisation. See how we’re improving this further here. The international and multi-disciplinary environment makes CERN a truly unique place to work and learn.

Job Description

The CERN Scientific Information Service Group  is seeking a Software Engineer. You will be part of an agile team working in Tools & Services section and you will contribute in one of the following projects:

  1. The development and operation of the INSPIRE service for High Energy Physicists, a live system with thousands of users every year, with high throughput REST APIs, and a state-of-the-art UX. You will work closely with our collaborators from 6 international institutions to design, develop, and deploy services and tools that strive to help researchers throughout their career to generate ideas, build projects, establish collaborations, and publish results of any kind (from data, code, slides to the preprints and published articles).
  2. A joint project with arXiv.org that is expected to be funded by the European Research Council (ERC). arXiv.org is the world's largest preprint repository and as such a prime service for researchers to deposit their work. Most of the work will be in Python and you will collaborate with arXiv software engineers to develop the new data model, create a crosswalk between legacy and new data model, backfill of arXiv records and extend the current search API.

As part of the team, you will work closely with other projects in the CERN Scientific Information Service Group to design, develop and deploy new features in-line with best practices in the open science and research movement. Additionally, you will also contribute to open-source projects and collaborate with the CERN Information Technology department.
