Electronics Engineer for Particle Sources (SY-STI-LP-2021-123-LD)

  • Contract

Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description

Introduction

Are you willing to become a key player in electron and ion sources for particle acceleration? Join CERN’s Sources, Targets and Interactions Group (STI) and leave your mark on the development/operation of the particle production systems for CERN's accelerators. Take part!

You will join the Accelerator Systems Department (SY), which is responsible for the beam-related technical systems of the CERN accelerators. The SY teams design, build and operate equipment systems in all CERN accelerators, and are engaged in ambitious forward-looking R&D programmes.

The Sources, Targets and Interactions Group (STI) in the Systems Department (SY) has a broad expertise on the interaction of beams with matter and applies its know-how to a large spectrum of activities including particle production, beam intercepting devices, studies on beam-matter interaction and nuclear engineering.

You will join the Lasers and Photocathodes Section (SY-STI-LP), responsible for laser installations and optical beam lines used to produce charged particle beams in the CERN accelerator complex and research facilities.

Functions

As an Electronics Engineer for Particle Sources, you will be a member of the team responsible for the design, development, maintenance and operation of laser, optical and electronics systems used to produce electron and radioactive ion beams in the CERN accelerator complex and research facilities.

You will:

  • Be responsible  for the operation and development of the CERN photoemission laboratory equipped to synthesize photocathodes for CERN photoinjectors, ensure production of photocathodes;
  • Design and implement automatic control loops for photocathodes production and real-time characterization of their photo-emissive properties;
  • Optimize the ion beam production systems through the design and implementation of optoelectronic improvements of the laser ion source installations of the ISOLDE and MEDICIS isotopes separation facilities;
  • Contribute to production of radioisotopes for medical applications by operating the MEDICIS ion beam facility;
  • Design and implement systems for monitoring and control of laser beams;
  • Define, directing and contribute to the maintenance of lasers, optical and electronics systems under responsibility of the group;
  • Participate in R&D projects related to novel approaches for electron and ion beam generation.
  • Manage procurements and contracts related to the activities above.

Qualifications

Master's degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of electronics engineering, controls or systems engineering, or applied physics or a related field.

Experience:

  • Extensive experience with operation and maintenance of laser equipment and experimental facilities;
  • Proven experience with laser-driven charged particle sources;
  • Experience with optical and particle beam measurement techniques;
  • Experience with LabVIEW based data acquisition and test systems;
  • Experience with handling of high vacuum installations would be an advantage.

Technical competencies:

  • Knowledge and application of beam production techniques, in particular photoemission and laser resonance ionization;
  • Knowledge and application of instrumentation and measurement techniques;
  • Knowledge of programming techniques and languages, in particular LabVIEW, Java, Python;
  • Configuration and implementation of industrial data-acquisition, monitoring and control systems;
  • Design and simulation of digital control loops and feedback systems.

Behavioural competencies:

  • Managing self: working well autonomously; taking on activities and tasks without prompting.
  • Achieving results: having a structured and organised approach towards work; being able to set priorities and plan tasks with results in mind.
  • Working in teams: working well in groups and readily fitting into a team; participating fully and taking an active role in team activities.
  • Communicating effectively: ensuring that information, procedures and decisions are appropriately documented.

Language skills:

  • Spoken and written English or French: ability to understand and speak at least one of the two languages in professional contexts. Ability to draw-up technical specifications and/or scientific reports and to make oral presentations in at least one of the two languages, and an undertaking to acquire the other language rapidly.
