Job Description

It’s a challenge for physicists to analyse the colossal amount of data the CMS detector produces recording the collisions generated by the LHC. We analyse it on a world wide distributed system, the Grid, with a tool called CRAB. CRAB turns a high-level description of analysis workflows into a set of Grid jobs, runs them with automatic error recovery, and retrieves, moves, and catalogs their output on behalf of the user, acting as an interface between the end users and the CMS world-wide HTCondor pool.

In your new position you will:

  • Be part of a dynamic team of devops engineers and physicists working in the CMS experiment;
  • Develop and operate CRAB, including its containerised deployment, interacting with a large number of CMS physicists;
  • Assist the CMS physics community to increase the effectiveness of their data analysis;
  • Be exposed to industry technologies such as Python, Docker, Kubernetes and HTCondor, learning how to master them.

Qualifications

Eligibility criteria:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State;
  • You have graduated, or are about to graduate, with a university degree (BSc or MSc level in computer science, engineering or another relevant course) and have no more than 4 years’ relevant experience after obtaining your degree;

Essential skills and experience:

  • Developing production-level code with the Python programming language;
  • You value learning and sharing knowledge with colleagues, proposing ways to streamline existing procedures;
  • You are passionate about software development and operation of services, which are robust, secure and well-tested;
  • You enjoy working in a lively environment, made of physicists and engineers, willing to adjust to demands and circumstances.

Desired technical skills:

  • Professional experience in one or more of the following would be an asset: workload management, distributed systems, physics analysis.

In return, CERN will provide you with:

  • An employment contract for between six months (minimum) up to a maximum of 36 months.
  • A stipend ranging from 5,281 to 6,558 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax).
  • Coverage by CERN’s comprehensive health scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund.
  • Depending on your individual circumstances: an installation grant, family, child and infant allowances as well as travel expenses to and from Geneva.
  • 2.5 days of paid leave per month.
