Job Description

The Mechanical and Materials Engineering Group (MME) of the Engineering department (EN) is in charge of engineering support combining mechanical design, production facilities and material sciences, for the maintenance of CERN facilities and the manufacturing of prototypes as required for CERN projects.

The Laboratory of Mechanical Measurements, part of the Engineering Design and Measurements section (EN-MME-EDM), is composed of 10 people. The Lab is specialized in measurements of mechanical quantities such as stresses and strains, displacements, pressures and vibrations. Measurements are applied to a wide range of components and devices for present and future high energy physics projects, such as: superconducting magnets, detectors of LHC experiments and prototypes for future upgrades, including high field accelerator magnets and accelerating structures.

Measurements are also cover a large variety of environments, including cryogenic temperatures, high radiation and high magnetic fields.

Functions

You will be involved in the wide range of activities performed by the Lab.

After an initial period of familiarization, you will prepare, participate and analyse the measurements carried out by the laboratory for several applications. More precisely, applications will cover the following:

  • Mechanical testing from room temperature up to 1200°C for different projects, in particular LHC consolidation and upgrades (Machine and experiments);
  • Failure analyses of LHC systems based on vibration and stress measurements;
  • -Thermo-mechanical characterization of advanced materials from 77K up to 2000°C;
  • -Development, characterisation, and calibration of custom sensors.

You will participate to meetings and report regularly on the progress of his/her research. The main results will be summarized in several reports for each activity and inside a final report, to be submitted to the management.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for a place on the programme you will need to meet the following requirements:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member State or Associate Member State (https://home.cern/about/member-states);
  • You have a Mechanical Technical Diploma or equivalent related field, and no more than 4 years' relevant experience after finishing your diploma;
  • If you are currently studying, you are still eligible to apply, although you are expected to have obtained your qualification by the start of your appointment at CERN;
  • If you hold a BSc or MSc, you are not eligible. However you may be eligible for the Fellowship Programme.
  • You should have at least a working knowledge of English or French.

Specific skills required for this job:

  • Experience in mechanical measurements
  • Good organizational and communication skills
  • Basic to intermediate experience in material properties, mechanical testing and analysis methods
