Automation Engineer (BE-ICS-AP-2020-137-LD)

  • Contract

Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description

Introduction

Would you like to design and develop industrial control systems for one of the world’s most complex technical instruments? We use an original approach based on industrial standards and the latest technologies. Be a part of something bigger; CERN, take part.

You will join:

•    The Beams Department (BE) - in charge of the exploitation of the largest accelerator complex and its technical infrastructure.

•    The Industrial Controls and Safety Systems Group (ICS) - whose activities include the development and support of control systems for the LHC and the high-energy physics experiments.

You will benefit from:

  • The opportunity to broaden your knowledge and experience into new areas and discover a domain where excellence is the key driving factor.
  • Specific training and support for professional development to foster your skills and develop your talents.

Functions

As an Automation Engineer in the Beams Department (BE), Industrial Control and Safety systems Group (ICS) and the Applications Section (AP), you will be in charge of the design, development, commissioning and support of industrial control systems for a diversity of industrial installations (e.g. HVAC, cooling, gas, industrial machinery). You will also participate in the design and development of software suites required for the production of such control systems.

Your main tasks will include:

  • Capture the requirements from field experts and compilation of all the relevant documents (e.g. functional analysis, functional Logic Diagrams, interface control documents).
  • Design of the control systems.
  • Development of PLC and SCADA layers of the control systems.
  • Management of the tests on platform (FAT) and in situ (SAT), in particular the preparation of the test catalogues.
  • Supervision of personnel developing and commissioning the control systems.
  • Perform the maintenance of the designed control systems.
  • Support to the users of the controls systems and software tools described above.
  • Write technical documents, reports and notes.
  • Continuously identify, measure, follow, and improve the performance of the control systems.

Qualifications

Master's degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of industrial control, automation engineering, industrial informatics or a related field.

Experience:

  • Extensive experience in the design and development of controls with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC).
  • Proven experience with installation, configuration, commissioning and maintenance of PLC-based control systems, including field interventions in large and distributed control systems.
  • Demonstrated experience on Configuring Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in capturing user requirements and elaborating technical documents and reports.
  • Initial experience in:
    • Fieldbuses and industrial communications.
    • Electrical control system components: sensors, relays, actuators.
    • Definition of tests catalogues and executions of tests.
    • Control theory.
  • Experience with thermodynamics, HVAC and cooling processes would be an asset.

Technical competencies:

  • Project management: organization and coordination with external stakeholders of small/medium automation projects.
  • Functional analysis of control systems: design of process control functional analysis and requirement analysis.
  • Design and implementation of digital control systems: pLC based control systems using frameworks and/or standards (e.g. CERN UNICOS, ISA-88).
  • Configuration and implementation of industrial data-acquisition, monitoring and control systems: configuration and programming of Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems.
  • Installation, operation and maintenance of industrial data-acquisition, monitoring and control systems: configuration and programming PLCs controllers, SCADA systems and fieldbus systems: eC-61131-3 standard, Step7, TIA portal, UNITY, Profibus, Profinet, Ethernet/IP.
  • Knowledge and application of automation and control theory: define regulation strategies and tune feedback controllers.

Behavioural competencies:

  • Managing Self: working well autonomously; taking on activities and tasks without prompting
  • Achieving Results: having a structured and organised approach towards work; being able to set priorities and plan tasks with results in mind Delivering high quality work on time and fulfilling expectations
  • Working in Teams: working well in groups and readily fitting into a team; participating fully and taking an active role in team activities
  • Demonstrating Flexibility: readily accepting new tasks or work/projects
  • Communicating Effectively: providing others with timely information Ensuring that information, procedures and decisions are appropriately documented

Language skills:

Spoken and written English or French: ability to draw up technical specifications and to make oral presentations in at least one of the two languages and an undertaking to acquire the other rapidly.
