Job Description

Functions

As a member of the Directorate, reporting to the Director-General, the Director for Finance and Human Resources will play a leading role in ensuring that the Organization's financial and human resources match its scientific goals and allow efficient operation of the Laboratory's facilities. The successful candidate's main tasks will include:

  • Exercising collegial responsibility with the rest of the Directorate for the general management of the Organization, under the overall executive authority of the Director-General;
  • Overseeing the planning, organisation and coordination of all CERN's financial, administrative and human resources activities, with the goal of ensuring that the resources available to the Organization are used as efficiently as possible to attain its scientific and operational objectives;
  • Developing financial strategies to address the needs of CERN’s future projects;
  • Providing professional and insightful advice to the Director-General and senior management on financial and human resources matters;
  • Managing relations with internal and external bodies, including the Finance Committee and Council, the External Auditors, the Staff Association, senior managers from financial institutes, etc.                            

Qualifications

  • Master's degree or PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of business administration or a related field.
  • Work experience in a scientific research institution or an additional degree in the fields of science or engineering will be considered important additional assets.

Experience:

  • Extensive management and administration experience at a senior level in an international organisation, public institution, or multinational company, in particular for financial matters;
  • Experience in interactions and negotiations with high-level public-sector and private partners;
  • Experience in formulating policies and strategies for submission to governing bodies, public institutions and other stakeholders, and implementation and application of such policies and strategies.

  • Demonstrating Flexibility: adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements.
  • Setting Direction: setting clear, challenging and attainable objectives; defining and communicating performance indicators.
  • Leading with Strength and Credibility: demonstrating authority and being accountable for actions, decisions and effective functioning of the team.

Language skills:

  • Excellent spoken and written English in professional contexts.
  • Understanding and speaking both English and French languages in professional contexts including the ability to issue reports and official communications and make oral presentations would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of other languages will be considered an additional asset.
