Join the team that consumes 80% of CERN’s Cloud, using Open Source and Cloud toolkits to administer the computers that turn the collisions in the Large Hadron Collider into data for physicists. The CERN Batch system runs over a million jobs a day, on over 200,000 cores of Linux compute, provided via OpenStack and Kubernetes infrastructure. Help us tame the infrastructure with automation.

You will evaluate the use of Open Source tooling (such as Zeebe and Stackstorm) to handle failures automatically in the batch and HPC compute services. These failures typically manifest as loss of capacity. As the compute capacity expands for the next Run of the LHC and beyond - and across multiple computer centres - automated remediation is becoming critically important to contain operational costs.

The project will build upon existing work, and consolidate the various bespoke tools in current use. It will integrate event feeds from the CERN Monitoring Infrastructure, HTCondor and the OpenStack fabric into common framework based on standard Open Source tooling.

Eligibility criteria:

• You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State;
• You have a Bachelor or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Development or other related field;
• You have no more than 4 years’ experience after completing your highest diploma.

Essential skills and experience:

• Experience with programming / scripting;
• Experience with the Linux Operating System, either administration or as a power user;
• You enjoy learning and  tackling new challenges;
• You are willing to participate in all service activities, including software development, system administration and user support;
• Experience with Container technologies (i.e. Docker, Kubernetes) or Clouds would be a plus.

Please note that CERN Staff members are not eligible to apply for a Fellowship.

 In return, CERN will provide you with:

• An employment contract for between six months (minimum) up to a maximum of 36 months.
• A stipend ranging from 5,281 to 6,558 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax).
• Coverage by CERN’s comprehensive health scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund.
• Depending on your individual circumstances: an installation grant, family, child and infant allowances as well as travel expenses to and from Geneva.
• 2.5 days of paid leave per month.
