Mechanical Technician (TTE Programme) - EAR Group

  • Full-time

Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Diversity has been an integral part of CERN's mission since its foundation and is an established value of the Organization.

Job Description

Are you a mechanical technician looking for a challenging professional experience to further your career?  If so, joining CERN’s TTE programme may very well give you that challenge.

The Experimental Areas Group in the Engineering Department is responsible for the beamlines, infrastructure and management of CERN’s experimental areas, for which it also provides support in the activities of design installation commissioning, maintenance.

The East Area of the CERN Proton Synchroton has served the physics community for over 50 years and remains extremely popular and necessary, among its multiple activities, to complete full calibration over a large energy spectrum of the detectors to be installed in the LHC experiments for the upgrade for the High Luminosity LHC.

The East Area renovation (EAR) addresses the refurbishment of the East Hall with its beamlines and infrastructures. A redesign of the beamlines is included to improve the magnet systems and the radiation condition in general.

The initial dismantling phase is now completed, and the project is now entering in the installation phase, followed by the commissioning during the first semester of 2021.

In this context, you will participate in the installation phase and mechanical beamlines readiness prior the commissioning campaign. In parallel, you will also contribute to the renovation of other beamline elements the group is responsible for.

Functions

As   Mechanical Technician, you will be integrated in the EAR team project for the Beam Lines Installation activities. After a period of familiarization with the project, you will be following the final production and the installation of all the mechanical supports required for all Beam Lines Equipment. This implies:

  • follow-up of the fabrication of mechanical parts (contact with contractors, reception, quality control…);
  • final assembly of the mechanical supports;
  • ensuring that logistics and planning have the material in time and on the worksite;
  • final installation of the supports.

Depending of the available time, your expertise and aptitude, you will be trained for and eventually carry out parts of the refurbishment of some beam line equipment, like specific tasks on secondary beamline collimators (Beam Intercepting Devices). This requires precise work on complex mechanical equipment. Envisaged refurbishment operations consist in the exchange of wearing parts like bearings, potentiometers, electrical motors and corresponding hardware tests.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for a place on the programme you will need to meet the following requirements:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member State or Associate Member State (https://home.cern/about/member-states);
  • You have a technical diploma on Mechanics,, Electromechanics, Mechatronics  or related fields (careers.cern/ttediplomas), and no more than 4 years' relevant experience after finishing your diploma;
  • If you are currently studying, you are still eligible to apply, although you are expected to have obtained your qualification by the start of your appointment at CERN;
  • If you hold a BSc or MSc, you are not eligible. However you may be eligible for the Fellowship Programme.
  • You should have at least a working knowledge of English or French.

Specific skills required for this job:

  • Mechanical Assembling and Machining;
  • Industrial maintenance;
  • Consultation of 3D and 2D drawings on CAD software;
  • Installation and maintenance of electromechanical systems;
  • Quality and documentation management.

Training value

You will have the possibility to expand your knowledge in:

  • Machining: during installation of mechanical supports, also machining some mechanical parts (e.g. shims, auxiliary components, etc. );
  • Work and Services Supervisor (WSS): Contractors could assist you during installation or assembling phases;
  • On-site works: installation of equipment in a specific slot defined by surveyors;
  • Logistic: transport/handling of material by interfacing with the CERN transport service;
  • Planning: prepare and follow detailed planning (GANTT) in order to respect milestones given by the Project Planning Officer.
  • Mechanical assembly: dismantling, cleaning, assembly, fine tuning, test of electro-mechanical equipment (i.e collimators) and respecting vacuum requirements.

Additional Information

CERN would very much like to benefit from your expertise, commitment and passion.  In return, CERN will provide you with:

  • An employment contract of one year, renewable for a second year;
  • On-the-job and formal training at CERN as well as in-house language courses for English and/or French;
  • A monthly stipend of 4565 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax);
  • Coverage by CERN’s comprehensive health scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund;
  • Depending on your individual circumstances: an installation grant, family, child and infant allowances as well as travel expenses to and from Geneva;
  • 2,5 days of paid leave per month.

This is how you can apply:
