Introduction

With a total of 130 km of the vacuum vessel, CERN operates one of the largest vacuum systems in the world. Are you interested in designing and following the production of new components for this unique infrastructure, then come and join the Vacuum, Surfaces and Coatings Group! Take part!

The Vacuum, Surfaces and Coatings Group is responsible for all high and ultra-high vacuum systems for the CERN accelerators. Its mandate covers all activities from development to operation, including design, production, and procurement, surface engineering and analysis, acceptance tests, control, and monitoring.

Functions

Within the VSC Group of the TE Department, you will:

  • Design mechanical components for Ultra-High Vacuum applications.
  • Make 3D integration of complex assemblies.
  • Follow the fabrication and procurement of vacuum components.
  • Write technical documentation for the design and procurement of vacuum components, in particular, write technical specifications, purchasing documents and technical procedures.

Qualifications

Higher technical diploma in the field of mechanics, or equivalent. or a related field.

Experience:

  • Excellent experience in the design of high precision mechanical systems.
  • Proven experience in computer-aided design and product lifecycle management software.
  • Demonstrated experience in dimensioning and tolerancing according to ISO standard.
  • Experience in procurement of mechanical components.
  • Knowledge in joining techniques (welding, brazing).
  • The first experience in vacuum technology would be an advantage.

Technical competencies:

  • Production of 2D drawings and 3D models: modeling (2D & 3D) and integration of mechanical systems with computer-aided design tools.
  • Knowledge and application of manufacturing methods and work preparation: process, preparation, planning, drawing, and control.
  • Definition of the manufacturing method, process, preparation, planning, drawing, and control.
  • Writing of technical documents.

Language skills:

Good knowledge of either English or French. Basic knowledge of the other language or an undertaking to acquire it rapidly.

Employment Conditions

Contract type: Limited duration contract (5 years). Subject to certain conditions, holders of limited-duration contracts may apply for an indefinite position.

These functions require:

  • Participation in a regular stand-by duty, including nights, Sundays and official holidays.
  • Work in Radiation Areas.
  • Residence in the immediate vicinity of the Organization's installations.
  • Interventions in underground installations.
  • A valid driving license.
