Are you a technician looking for a challenging professional experience to further your career?  If so, joining CERN’s TTE programme may very well give you that challenge. This position as an Electrical Technician for the preparation and work supervision of signal and DC-cabling installations is part of our prestigious TTE programme. 

The Fibre Optics and Cabling Section in the Electrical Engineering Group is responsible for the installation of fibre optics and copper cabling in the entire CERN accelerator complex and general infrastructure.

Functions

By joining the EL- FC Section, you will actively participate in the preparation and work supervision of cabling installations for diverse equipment at CERN. Amongst your tasks you will be involved in the following:

• Establish installation requirements for signal cabling and DC-power cabling for the accelerator magnets;
• Take part in defining the cable cross-section and connector specifications;
• Assist the project managers in preparing technical work files for the contractors;
• Contribute in drafting the planning for cabling works and follow up with the
• contractors;
• Organize and manage worksite meetings;
• Verify the quality of the work performed by contractors;
• Organize maintenance and repair activities when required;
• Participate in similar, fibre optics, activities as required;
• Prepare work progress reports;

You will be guided to acquire the capacity of dealing with installations of increasing complexity. Your capacity of efficiently supporting and integrating the Section team will be a key aspect of your daily work.

In order to qualify for this place on the programme you will need to meet the following requirements:

• You are a national of a CERN Member State or Associate Member State (https://home.cern/about/member-states);
• You have a higher Technical Diploma in Electricity or equivalent (careers.cern/ttediplomas), and no more than 4 years' relevant experience after finishing your diploma;
• If you are currently studying, you are still eligible to apply, although you are expected to have obtained your qualification by the start of your appointment at CERN;
• If you hold a BSc or MSc, you are not eligible. However, you may be eligible for the Fellowship Programme.
• You should have at least a working knowledge of English or French.

Specific skills required for this job:

• Willingness to work on cable installations on-site (machine tunnels, galleries, experimental areas, radiation environment) for most of your time, and excellent team-working attitude.
• Good knowledge of English or French;
• A valid driving license.

The candidate will gain experience in the commissioning of instrumentation channels, in the application of strict quality assurance procedures imposed by a system involving several thousands of acquisition channels and low noise techniques required by the low level of signals encountered in the cryogenic applications. Furthermore, this work requires continuous interactions with different teams assuring a possibility to acquire communication skills with CERN its multicultural environment.
