Electromechanical Technical Engineer (TE-MSC-MDT-2019-29-LD)

  • Contract

Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description

Introduction

Come and join a great team which pushes the boundaries of superconducting accelerator magnets and is instrumental in shaping the future of CERN's largest accelerator. Take part!

You will join:

  • The Magnets, Superconductors and Cryostats (MSC) group of the Technology (TE) department, which has the mandate to design, construct and measure the superconducting and normal conducting magnets for the CERN accelerator complex; integrates them into the CERN accelerator complex; designs and procures the magnet cryostats; performs the magnet quality control; provides support to the operation of the accelerators for magnets, magnet performance, devices (current leads); and develops associated technologies.
  • The Magnet Design and Technology (MDT) section, which is responsible for the superconducting magnet design and technology for the full range, from functional specification to the construction of short prototypes. The section also designs the studies of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) upgrade and future projects, by involving superconducting magnets; performs superconducting magnet performance analysis and feedback on the design; maintains the Magnetic model of the LHC; and provides support to beam commissioning and operation; is responsible for the superconducting magnet insulation development; and provides CERN-wide support for polymer casting and rapid prototyping.

Functions

As an experienced technical engineer in the Magnet Design and Technology (MDT) section, you will develop a strong expertise in the field of accelerator magnet construction by:

  • Contributing to the development of specific magnet construction activities in the magnet laboratory in collaboration with engineers, such as the work organisation for the magnet assembly or one of the coil fabrication poles.
  • Becoming a driving force in the development of superconducting magnets, specifically related to technical aspects and fabrication.
  • Supervising the technical work of technicians, and organising the work schedule as a function of the general planning.
  • Ensuring the compliance of safety rules to the assembly or fabrication of magnet.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of electro-mechanics, magnets, or a related field.

Experience:

The experience required for this post is:

  • Proven experience in electro-mechanics, manufacturing technologies, and processes.
  • Extensive experience in the production management of equipment with high complexity, including special technologies.
  • Experience in the technical supervision of technicians or coordination of a workshop.

Technical competencies:

  • Assembly of electronic components: experience in the production and assembly of coils for electromagnets, or similar equipment of high complexity.
  • Operation and maintenance of electro-mechanical equipment and systems: knowledge of operation safety in a workshop environment.
  • Design and modelling of superconducting magnets: knowledge in the winding, curing, reaction, and impregnation of coils for magnets is an asset.
  • Experience in managing and optimising workshop resources.
  • Knowledge of operation safety in a workshop environment.

Behavioural competencies:

  • Demonstrating accountability: working conscientiously and reliably; and delivering on promises.
  • Demonstrating flexibility: readily absorbing new techniques and working practices; and proposing new or improved ways of working.
  • Achieving results: delivering high quality work on time and fulfilling expectations; objectively assessing and monitoring own work; regularly reporting on progress and advising of any changes in schedule or priorities; and producing comprehensive work / project plans by taking into account resources and contingencies.
  • Working in the interest of the Organization: actively promoting safety and encouraging others to do the same; and respecting safety rules and procedures.
  • Working in teams: understanding when teamwork is required to achieve the best results; and including others accordingly and sharing information

Language skills:

  • Spoken and written English or French
  • Good knowledge of the other language or willingness to acquire it rapidly.
