Electromechanical Technician (TE-MSC-MNC-2018-111-LD)

  • Contract

Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description

Introduction

Come and join a great team which ensures the reliable operation and the upgrade of all normal conducting magnets on the CERN site. Take part!

As an Electromechanical Technician, you will join the Magnets, Superconductors and Cryostats (MSC) group of the Technology Department (TE). They have the mandate to design, construct and measure the superconducting and normal conducting magnets for the CERN accelerator complex; to integrate them into the CERN accelerator complex; to design and procure the magnet cryostats; and to perform magnet quality control. The group also provides support to the operation of the accelerators for magnets, magnet performance and devices (current leads). The Normal Conducting Magnets Section (MNC) is responsible for the design, construction, commissioning, maintenance and upgrade of the normal conducting magnets (NC) for the present and the future CERN accelerators and beam lines.

Functions

As an electro-mechanical technician in the MNC section, you will participate in the operation and maintenance of the about 5,000 normal conducting magnets installed in the CERN accelerators complex. You will:

  • Perform the required work in the machine during the technical stops; follow-up all related safety aspects; and refurbish spare magnets and components in collaboration with the those responsible for the machine.
  • Prepare, plan, carry out, and monitor interventions on the magnets in the CERN accelerators.
  • Provide support and participate in the treatment of the normal conducting magnets in the CERN workshops.
  • Participate in the development and manufacturing of new electro-magnets and permanent magnets.

Qualifications

Higher technical diploma in the field of mechanics/electro-mechanics, or a related field.

Experience

  • Demonstrated experience in manufacturing and assembling of electro-mechanical devices.
  • Demonstrated experience in measuring and testing in electricity.
  • Demonstrated experience in mechanical machining (milling).
  • Demonstrated experience in reading mechanical and electrical drawings.

The following would be an advantage:

  • Experience in TIG/MIG welding, and ideally in brazing techniques.
  • Experience in precision mechanical measurements.
  • Experience in the Computer Aided Design (CAD).

Technical competencies

  • Construction, testing, and installation of electromechanical equipment and systems.
  • Operation and maintenance of electromechanical equipment and systems.

Behavioural competencies:

  • Working in teams: building and maintaining constructive and effective work relationships.
  • Achieving results: driving work/projects along and seeing them through to their conclusion; allocating appropriate amount of time for completing tasks.
  • Demonstrating flexibility: readily accepting new tasks or work/projects; adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements.
  • Communicating effectively: ensuring that information, procedures, and decisions are appropriately documented.
  • Managing self: working well autonomously; and taking on activities and tasks without prompting
