Accelerator Physicist (TE-ABT-BTP-2018-56-LD)

  • Contract

Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description

Introduction

Are you a motivated accelerator physicist in the field of injection and extraction? Do you relish a challenge? Join CERN’s Accelerator Beam Transfer Group to work in the field of beam transfer systems applied to the largest particle physics laboratory in the world. CERN, take part!

You will join:

The Beam Transfer Physics Section (TE-ABT-BTP), responsible for conceptual design studies of beam transfer systems for new and proposed accelerators, and for the commissioning, machine studies and operational follow-up of existing systems.

Functions

As Accelerator Physicist in the TE-ABT-BTP Section, you will:

  • Participate in the daily operation and performance optimisation of existing facilities.
  • Define parameters and simulate performance for the re-design or upgrade of existing beam transfer systems of the LHC and injector complex.
  • Design of beam transfer systems for approved projects and studies.
  • Coordinate and carry out the commissioning of existing, new or upgraded beam transfer systems.
  • Perform, analyse and report on experimental Machine Development studies.
  • Supervise master and PhD students and post-doctoral Fellows.

  • Demonstrated experience in beam optics and related codes.
  • Initial experience in injection and extraction methods and transfer line design.
  • Experience in supervision of students would be an advantage.

Technical competencies:

  • Knowledge and application of beam injection and extraction methods, beam transfer and dumping: beam injection and extraction methods, beam transfer and dumping.
  • Simulation, design and development of primary and secondary beam lines.
  • Analysis and optimization of accelerator performance.
  • Knowledge and application of beam optics (rings and transfer lines).
  • Use of Office software packages: use of scientific and engineering software packages.

Behavioural competencies:

  • Managing self: taking initiative beyond regular tasks and making things happen.
  • Achieving results: being rigorous and producing quality results at first attempt.
  • Solving problems: recognising what is essential; discriminating between important and peripheral information and being able to see the whole picture.
