Assembly, testing, and application of transducers for magnetic fields (TTE Programme)

  • Full-time

Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Diversity has been an integral part of CERN's mission since its foundation and is an established value of the Organization.

Job Description

Are you a technician looking for a challenging professional experience to further your career?  If so, joining CERN’s TTE programme may very well give you that challenge.

The magnetic measurement section in the Magnets and Superconductor Group is responsible for the measurements of normal and superconducting magnets for a variety of accelerator projects. To this end the section develops and operates state-of-the-art transducers for magnetic fields. The development of such systems comprises mechanics for the benches, drive systems, electronics for the data acquisition systems, controls, as well as field-theoretical aspects for the interpretation of magnetic measurements of accelerator magnets.

Functions

Activities of the fellow will include assembly and metrological characterization of equipment for magnetic measurements and the preparation and supervision of magnetic measurement systems.

The technical fellow will initially also help in the execution of pre-defined measurements scripts. After this training period, the fellow shall be able to supervise magnetic measurements of normal conducting magnets and superconducting magnets using the main systems employed in the section, i.e., the stretched wire and the rotating coil magnetometers.

With a view from a first-time user of the systems the fellow shall also help to prepare user manuals for these two main measurement systems and help in improving their user’s interface.

According to the fellows technical background and interest, he shall also contribute to the analysis of the measurement results.

Your application will be considered by a panel of CERN experts for a place within the programme.

The next meeting of these experts will take place in September 2018.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for a place on the programme you will need to meet the following requirements:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member State or Associate Member State (https://home.cern/about/member-states);
  • You have a Technical Diploma (careers.cern/ttediplomas), and no more than 4 years' relevant experience after finishing your diploma;
  • If you are currently studying, you are still eligible to apply, although you are expected to have obtained your qualification by the start of your appointment at CERN;
  • If you hold a BSc or MSc, you are not eligible. However you may be eligible for the Fellowship Programme.

You should be fluent in English OR French.

    Additional Information

    CERN would very much like to benefit from your expertise, commitment and passion.  In return, CERN will provide you with:

    • An employment contract of one year, renewable for a second year;
    • On-the-job and formal training at CERN as well as in-house language courses for English and/or French;
    • A take home pay of approximately 3,540 CHF per month (net of tax);
    • Coverage by CERN’s comprehensive health scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund;
    • Depending on your individual circumstances: an installation grant, family, child and infant allowances as well as travel expenses to and from Geneva;
    • 2.5 days of paid leave per month.

    Specific skills required for this job:

    Technical Diploma in electro-mechanics or mechanics.

    Skills required include electro-mechanical construction, the making of drawings (basic knowledge in CAD systems), testing, precision assembly and construction, as well as commissioning and maintenance of electro-mechanical equipment. Because of the large range of skills required, the work will be customized according to the qualification of the candidate.

    Some knowledge of sensors and calibration would be an asset.

    This is how you can apply:

    You will need the following documents to complete your application:

    • A scanned copy of your latest relevant qualification;
    • At least one reference letter (from a professor or previous employer) giving an overview of your academic and/or professional achievements. This should be as broad as possible.
      • You can upload these letters at the time of application if you have them to hand. You will also be provided with a link as soon as you have submitted your application to forward to your referees to upload their letters confidentially. Please note this must be done before the closing date.

    All applications should normally reach us no later than 31.01.2019.

    Please make sure you have all the documents requested to hand as you start your application. Once submitted you will not be able to upload any documents or edit your application.
