Electrical Engineer (EN-EL-MT-2018-88-LD)

  • Contract

Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description

Introduction

Are you an experienced electrical engineer, specialized in specific equipment using power electronics like battery-based power systems? Contribute your skills to the maintenance, consolidation and extension of a complex electrical transmission and distribution network, dedicated to a unique laboratory hosting some of the world's most complex technical installations. Join CERN's Electrical Engineering team. Take part!

You will join:

  • The Department that provides engineering competencies, infrastructure systems, and technical coordination for the world's largest particle accelerator complex and its experimental facilities.
  • The Group that is responsible for CERN's electrical transmission and distribution network from 400 kV to 400/230 V. Its main missions are to operate, maintain, extend and renovate the electrical network, make projections for CERN's electrical energy consumption and manage relations with the energy suppliers. The Group is also in charge of making modifications and extensions to the network when required by new projects, including design studies, equipment procurement, installation, supervision and commissioning.
  • The Section that is responsible for the management and the maintenance of the main electrical equipment making up the CERN electrical transmission and distribution network. The Section defines global strategies related to electrical equipment, manages electrical equipment procurement, organizes and carries out preventive and corrective maintenance activities, including the implementation of spare parts policies and the execution of consolidation projects.

Functions

As an Electrical Engineer in the Electrical Network Maintenance (MT) Section, you will manage low voltage equipment, in particular Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems, DC battery-based power systems and 400/230 V metal-enclosed indoor switchboards of modular design, throughout the whole equipment lifecycle.

For the electrical equipment you are responsible for, you will:

  • Define equipment-related strategies, in particular for risk assessments, preventive and corrective maintenance, consolidation and spare parts policies.
  • Draw up technical specifications and all tendering documents for the supply of electrical equipment and manage related contracts.
  • Develop coherent maintenance plans and define electrical equipment data to be registered in CERN's computer aided asset and maintenance management database.
  • Provide technical support and expertise during installation and commissioning of the electrical equipment as well as corrective maintenance on this equipment if needed.
  • Establish and set up maintenance services contracts to be managed by maintenance manager(s).
  • Ensure the backup of the maintenance manager(s).
  • Manage and deliver specific maintenance and consolidation projects and works.

Qualifications

Master's degree, or equivalent relevant experience in the field of electrical engineering, or a related field.

Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience in the design and/or commissioning and maintenance of specific high or low voltage equipment using power electronics (e.g. UPS systems, rectifiers, inverters, etc.).
  • Demonstrated theoretical and practical knowledge of low voltage networks, switchboards and low voltage distribution systems.
  • Proven experience in the establishment of quality assurance plans, policies and procedures.
  • Experience in the design, operation and maintenance management of high or low voltage power networks and components (e.g. switchgear, transformers, UPS systems, diesel generators, etc.) for a large industrial site would be an asset.

Technical competencies:

  • Specification and follow-up of technical aspects of a contract.
  • Construction, test and commissioning of electrical circuits and networks.
  • Design and modelling of high-voltage electrical circuits and networks.

Behavioural competencies:

  • Managing self: working well autonomously; taking on activities and tasks without prompting; taking initiative beyond regular tasks and making things happen.
  • Solving problems: assimilating large quantities of information, identifying key issues and formulating conclusions clearly and concisely; identifying, defining and assessing problems, taking action to address them.
  • Achieving results: delivering high quality work on time and fulfilling expectations.
  • Working in teams: building and maintaining constructive and effective work relationships.
  • Communicating effectively: listening actively to others and letting others speak.

Language skills:

  • Spoken and written English or French: ability to understand and speak the other language in professional contexts would be an advantage.
  • Ability to draw-up technical specifications and tendering documents and to make oral presentations in at least one of the two languages.
