Electromechanical Technician (EN-EL-OP-2018-46-LD)

  • Contract

Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description

Introduction

Join a great team of electromechanical technicians and contribute your knowledge of diesel generators and troubleshooting skills for the smooth operation of CERN’s electrical network. Take part!

You will join:

The Electrical Engineering Group (EL) of the Engineering Department (EN) has the mandate to design, procure and operate CERN’s electrical power distribution networks. The CERN electrical network, supplied by 130 kV and 400 kV lines respectively from Switzerland and France, provides electrical power to a number of high-energy particle accelerators, large-scale experimental areas, the Organization's computer centre and many office buildings on the various sites. The installed electrical power at the 18 kV level is rated at approximately 500 MVA.

The Network Operation Section (OP) is responsible for the operation of CERN's electrical distribution network: high and low voltage installations (400 kV, 66 kV, 20 kV, 18 kV, 3.3 kV, 400 V, 48V).

Functions

As an electromechanical technician in the Network Operation Section (OP), you will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of diesel generators as well as for the operations of a designated area of the CERN high and low-voltage network. You will:

  • Prepare, plan, carry out and monitor interventions on the diesel generators, such as periodic tests, preventive and corrective maintenance, and ensure that all diesel generators are available in case of emergency or malfunction.
  • Prepare, plan, carry out and monitor interventions on the high and low voltage electrical network, including network reconfigurations, disconnection and isolation of equipment and making it safe.
  • Manage administrative tasks (inspections; tendering;  issuing work certificates;  reporting and invoicing) related to oversight of contractors’ activities.
  • Manage related maintenance activities using a computer-aided maintenance management system (CAMMS).

You will also:

  • Carry out periodic inspections of safety equipment (diesel generator sets, automatic devices, emergency stops) and ensure the safety of the electrical sub-stations as Territorial Safety Officer.

Qualifications

Higher technical diploma in the field of electro-mechanics or a related field.

Experience:

The experience required for this post is:

  • Extensive experience in the operation and maintenance of diesel generators for secured networks, as well as high and low voltage electrical network equipment.
  • Experience in the use of computer-assisted maintenance management systems (CAMMS).

The following would be an advantage:

  • Experience in the implementation of digital protection relays and programmable logic controllers (PLC).
  • Familiarity with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems.

Technical competencies:

  • Use of Office software packages.
  • Construction, test and installation of electromechanical equipment and systems.
  • Very good theoretical and practical knowledge of diesel and alternator installations and modern equipment associated with a complex high and low voltage electrical network: 400 kV and 66 kV substations, 18kV distribution panels, 400V distribution systems, high-voltage protection relays, transformers, inverters, chargers, batteries, diesel generator sets, programmable logic controllers (PLC).
  • Commissioning, maintenance and operation of diesel generator sets and high and low voltage electrical distribution systems.

Behavioural competencies:

  • Working in teams: building and maintaining constructive and effective work relationships.
  • Achieving results: driving work/projects along and seeing them through to their conclusion.
  • Demonstrating flexibility: readily accepting new tasks or work/projects; adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements.
  • Communicating effectively: ensuring that information, procedures and decisions are appropriately documented.
  • Managing self: working well autonomously; taking on activities and tasks without prompting.

Language skills:

  • Spoken and written French; basic knowledge of English or willingness to acquire it rapidly.

Additional Information

Eligibility and closing date:

Diversity has been an integral part of CERN's mission since its foundation and is an established value of the Organization. Employing a diverse workforce is central to our success. We welcome applications from all Member States and Associate Member States (http://cern.ch/jobs/content/member-states).

This vacancy will be filled as soon as possible, and applications should normally reach us no later than 27.06.2018.

Employment Conditions

Contract type: Limited duration contract (5 years). Subject to certain conditions, holders of limited-duration contracts may apply for an indefinite position.

These functions require:

  • Participation in a regular stand-by duty, including nights, Sundays and official holidays.
  • Work in radiation areas.
  • Residence in the immediate vicinity of the Organization's installations.
  • Work during nights, Sundays and official holidays.
  • Interventions in underground installations.
  • A valid driving licence.
  • Shift work, when required by the needs of the Organization.
