CASES is a New York City leader in providing services to individuals with behavioral health needs who are involved in the criminal legal system. Our behavioral health programs include Clinic, Health Home Plus Care Management, Forensic Homeless Intensive Case Management (ICM), Assertive Community Treatment (ACT), Forensic ACT, and Intensive Mobile Treatment (IMT).

IMT is a multi-disciplinary team of behavioral health professionals (e.g., psychiatric care providers, registered nurses, behavioral health specialists, peer support staff) serving 27 clients identified by the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) Single Point of Access (SPOA) who have frequent movement across the behavioral health care system, the housing system and the criminal justice system; existing underlying risk of violence and/or violent behavior; serious mental illness diagnosis; and/or a history of, or active use of, substances. IMT services include assessment and treatment planning, crisis intervention, medication management, medication assisted treatment, integrated mental health and substance abuse treatment, individual and group therapies, psycho-education, psychosocial and vocational rehabilitation, assistance with medical concerns and medication, linkage and follow-up assistance to primary medical care including on-going communication with primary care physicians, assistance with activities of daily living, assistance obtaining entitlements, housing procurement and support, linkage/coordination with the criminal justice system, and shelter system, and assistance in using family and community resources. The primary goal of IMT is engagement and improving clients’ quality of life through engagement in treatment, rehabilitation, housing, and support services that promote wellness, recovery, community integration as well as community safety. 

The Medical Director of IMT Services is a full-time psychiatrist position responsible for the oversight of all psychiatry staff and services in the IMT department. The Medial Director also provides half-time direct care psychiatric coverage for one IMT team. This is a great opportunity for a psychiatrist who is passionate about providing high-quality community-based services to individuals with complex and challenging behavioral health issues, especially if interested in a hybrid clinical-leadership role as part of their career development.

Job Description

  • Clinically supervise all IMT psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners.
  • Support psychiatry staff in their hiring and professional development, including entering into collaborative practice agreements with psychiatric nurse practitioners, as needed.
  • Support all IMT department staff through clinical leadership, training, and participation in the Incident Review Committee (IRC).
  • Provide 17.5 hours of direct psychiatric care for one IMT team, including community-based psychiatric assessment and medication management, as part of a treatment team model.
  • Work with Director of IMT Services and other agency leadership to ensure the provision of high-quality psychiatric care for all IMT clients.
  • Work with IMT leadership and agency Quality Assurance to provide IMT services in accordance with the scope of services outlined by the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH).
  • Model principles of recovery-oriented practices in behavioral health settings, e.g., integrated treatment for co-occurring disorders, physical health care coordination, trauma-informed care, cultural humility, gender-responsive, and anti-racist interventions.
  • Support best practices in the areas of outreach & engagement, violence risk assessment & management, alternatives to incarceration, and risk-need-responsivity models for those involved in the criminal legal system.
  • Develop strategic relationships with external stakeholders, e.g., DOHMH, Assisted Outpatient Treatment (AOT), city and state departments of probation and parole, local hospitals, shelters, supportive housing providers, etc.
  • Other duties as required by agency executive staff.

Qualifications

  • Active New York license as a Psychiatrist
  • 1+ years of leadership experience in clinical program operations.
  • 3+ years of experience working with individuals with serious mental illness, substance use disorders, and criminal-legal system involvement.
  • Ability to flourish in a fast-paced and changing environment that includes the simultaneous startup of several new IMT teams.
  • Proficient in electronic health records, preferably Foothold Technology AWARDS.
  • Fluency in Spanish a plus.
