This new team, led by a forensic clinical psychologist, is conducting intake assessments for the CASES alternative-to-detention/incarceration (ATD/ATI) programs for youth/young adults and people with serious mental illness. These ATD/ATI programs directly help reduce the utilization of jails and prisons.

The Senior Intake Clinician is responsible for conducting evaluations to identify eligible participants, preparing reports in a timely manner, and advocating to criminal legal stakeholders (e.g., prosecutors and judges) related to assessment findings and ATD/ATI recommendations. The ATI Intake Assessment Team is the link between the courts and the CASES community ATD/ATI programs, and as such all ATI Intake staff will also collaborate closely with community program colleagues to ensure court mandates are translated into programming. We are seeking a licensed Master’s-level clinician with advanced experience in forensic mental health assessment and treatment planning: the location will be in Brooklyn and  based in the CASES court office for the specified borough.

Location: Brooklyn

• Review referrals to determine a person’s eligibility for the CASES ATD/ATI programs, including arrest case information, criminal legal history, attorney recommendations, and preliminary information about participant needs.
• Engage potential participants and their legal representation in and around the courtroom.
• Undertake screening interviews with potential participants to explain the CASES program(s) and administer and score standardized mental health, drug use, and other screening instruments to identify needs and suitability for the CASES programs.
• Conduct risk assessments utilizing the HCR-20 v3 and the Short-Term Assessment of Risk and Treatability (START) adult and adolescent versions to develop comprehensive evaluation reports presenting a defendant’s eligibility for ATI participation.
• Conduct screening and assessment of individuals referred from Kirby Forensic Psychiatric Center who have received restoration of competency services following arrest and pretrial detention.
• Effectively manage crises to ensure participant safety and well-being.
• Formulate diagnoses and develop individualized ATI program plans.
• Write formal evaluation reports, in compliance with ATI assessment requirements and quality standards, and advocate with prosecutors and judges to approve ATI disposition for eligible defendants.
• Maintain excellent professional relationships with judges, district attorneys, defense counsel, probation, and other court partners to facilitate program admissions and maintain the credibility of CASES in court.
• Complete all necessary intake paperwork, including entering participant information into the Salesforce databases.
• Participate in clinical supervision, case review meetings, staff meetings, and in-service training programs.
• Participate in relevant quality improvement, staff training, coaching, and planning activities.
• Provide culturally competent services ensuring the consideration of the role of ethnic/racial, cultural, social, economic, and behavioral factors in the accessibility, availability, and delivery of evaluation services.
• Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisors.

• LMSW, LCSW, LMHC with active NY State license or the ability to obtain licensure within six months.
• At least 2 years of experience conducting psychosocial assessments.
• Preference for experience working with youth and young adults and people with mental illness.
• Preference for experience working with individuals involved in the criminal legal system.
• Ability to work independently and strong advocacy and writing skills.
• Proven ability to function effectively in a high paced and stressful environment.
• Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of participants and staff.
• Interest in, and sensitivity to, issues facing individuals involved in the criminal legal system.
