Business for Health Solutions (BHS) is an international non-profit that applies an innovative private-sector approach to health systems strengthening in Africa. 

We work to develop the capacity of local healthcare enterprises across the healthcare value chain by providing technical assistance that sustainably increases the accessibility, affordability and quality of health products and services for families and communities. 

We facilitate remote technical assistance projects for enterprises in distribution, drug manufacturing, health insurance and service provision delivered by highly skilled volunteer experts from large international pharmaceutical and healthcare companies.

The organization consists of a global team based in Tanzania, Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, Zambia, Switzerland and the US.   BHS is currently supporting local healthcare enterprises in East, West, Central and Southern African countries.

Job Description

Main Responsibilities of the Client Engagement Manager

BHS plans to scale, particularly in francophone African countries such as the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Senegal, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic (CAR), Chad, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Niger and Sierra Leone. 

BHS is seeking to recruit a Client Engagement Manager who will play a key role in BHS's expansion into these new African geographies by ensuring the successful identification and recruitment of local healthcare enterprises (BHS “clients”) and facilitation of remote Technical Assistance (TA) projects, plus key monitoring and evaluation (M&E) efforts. 

Successful candidates are expected to be fluent in English and French and have experience with health systems in at least some of the proposed priority geographies under consideration for expansion.

The position reports directly to the Co-CEO responsible for Programs at BHS (Kigali-based) and works closely with the global team. This role collaborates highly with regionally focused Client Engagement Managers based in Ghana (supporting West and Central African countries) and Zambia (supporting East and Southern African countries). 

Key Client Engagement Manager Responsibilities Include:

Support BHS Client's Participant Enrollment Efforts 

  • Support mapping of local healthcare enterprises and intermediaries through outreach and engagement of local healthcare enterprises to build a broad pipeline
  • Introduce BHS to leadership at target enterprises and assess buy-in to engage in TA projects
  • Introduce local healthcare enterprise leadership to the BHS team, including the Co-CEO responsible for Programs at BHS (based in Rwanda)

Support the Co-CEO Responsible for Programs in High Level Landscaping of the Position and Role of the Private Sector in Priority, New Geographies

  • Engaging with key stakeholders, private healthcare enterprises, public sector actors, and others to gather insights on the private sector ecosystem in priority geographies,
  • The role of the private sector in the overall health systems,
  • A mapping of common gaps or challenges that limit the contributions the private sector can make in overall healthcare access, and
  • Other relevant insights.

Priority geographies may include Burkina Faso, Central African Republic (CAR), Chad, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Madagascar, Mali, Mozambique, Niger, Sierra Leone, Somalia, and South Sudan.

Provide Technical Support and Coordination Efforts to Monitor and Evaluate Projects 

Collaborate with the Tanzanian based Monitoring Evaluation and Learning (MEL) Officer at BHS to:

  • Develop project charters for each project, including the development of relevant project metrics (qualitative and quantitative), collection and measurement of baseline and endline progress for each project, etc.
  • Collect and enter data regularly from BHS client participants 
  • Gather pre-and post-project online surveys for the client participants
  • Support gathering of health utilization and demand figures for client products or country level health utilization data,
  • Conduct face-to-face project debriefs where possible
  • Work with BHS Communications to prepare project case studies

Facilitate Remote Technical Assistance Projects

  • Work with BHS clients to collect background information about the enterprise, identify their technical needs, and draft BHS client profiles and project scopes
  • Work with the Volunteer Engagement Manager, define volunteer experts' requirements and support volunteer matching as required
  • Collaborate with the Client Engagement Managers (CEM) to support both East, West, Central and Southern Africa pipelines by working with BHS clients to collect background information about the enterprise, identify their technical needs and draft BHS client profiles and project scopes.
  • Help onboard BHS clients to remote assistance, setting clear expectations and roles 
  • Support BHS clients through the entire BHS project cycle; ensure alignment around project charter goals, support teams to maintain regular call schedule, prepare meeting minutes and agreed actions
  • Regularly communicate with BHS clients to identify any problems and ensure client satisfaction with the BHS program 
  • Provide direct technical support to the BHS client where necessary (e.g. troubleshooting VOIP dial-in issues etc.)

Operational Reports, Documents and Project Management

  • Provide any necessary content for regular reporting
  • Any other duties assigned

Contract Period and Location

This position will require part-time to full-time effort and candidates with more availability will be highly preferred. The duration of this contract is 4-6 months with the option of a renewal, subject to satisfactory performance, availability of funds and continued need for the position. The position is remote, with a preference for physical presence in countries where BHS has existing staff, network or projects (Senegal, Ghana, Sierra Leone, DRC, Rwanda)

Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications and Experience 

Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience in African health sectors and a mix of entrepreneurial, strategic and operational experience. Specific technical expertise in innovations and social enterprises in healthcare delivery (digital, data science, clinical innovations) and impact investment in health will be seen as an advantage. Other areas of expertise that would be considered beneficial may include; pharmaceutical manufacturing, distribution, private health service delivery, pharmaceutical sales and marketing or related.
